Translation and Explanation of Parvati from Hanuman Ansh

Parvati – Hit Song by Sadhu Tiwari Translated and Explained

Meta Description:  Parvati is a song from Hanuman Ansh that was written, composed and sung by Sadhu Tiwari. The poetic translation depicts a popular event from Hindu mythology.

Setting the Background for Translating Parvati

The translation of Parvati should have been posted long ago, when Hanuman Ansh was released and the song went viral on social media, with people creating their own dance steps and Parvati responding to the questions posed by the Seven Sages. The song was so simple and pure in its appeal that I simply did not have the courage to attempt a translation. Poetry, after all, loses something in translation, and I was reluctant to create something that might fall short of the original.

Much water has flowed under the bridge since then, and I hope that an English translation, though it can never hope to do justice to the beauty of the original, will now be more readily accepted. The song is sung in a local dialect, which is a main reason for endearing it to listeners.

The Context of Parvati in the Narrative of Hanuman Ansh

The song Parvati (Jab Zid Pe Aa Gayi Parvati) in Hanuman Ansh is based on the popular episode of Goddess Parvati's determination to marry Lord Shiva, despite the Saptarishis (the Seven Sages) trying to dissuade her on account of his ascetic way of life. The song, therefore, is not directly about the characters in the film.

However, it serves as a parallel between the mythological marriage of Shiva and Parvati and that of Lakshminarayan, the future Neem Karoli Baba (Shobhinaw Satyaa) and Rambeti (Purnima Tiwari). Like Shiva, Lakshminarayan was deeply immersed in devotion and had little interest in worldly life. He had, however, been married to Rambeti in childhood, as was customary at the time, and was now compelled to honour that marital commitment. There is a similarity between Lakshminarayan's reluctance to embrace married life and Shiva's initial reluctance to marry Parvati, and his subsequent consent to the marriage.

In the film, the song plays in the background as Lakshminarayan and Rambeti go through the various wedding rituals. The juxtaposition of the two stories draws attention to the parallels between them, making the song an apt musical accompaniment to the sequence.

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Jab Jid Pe Aa Gayi Parvati

Shambhu!

Shiva Shambhu!

Bholenath!

When determined was Parvati,

Parvati, Parvati,

The Seven Sages asked firmly,

Asked firmly, asked firmly

Why so obstinate

Why so desperate

Why so obstinate

Why so desperate

For such a weird groom

Why so obstinate

Why so desperate

For such a weird groom

Ganga on his head

And around his neck snakes form a path

Ganga on his head

And around his neck snakes form a path

He is such a simple soul

All call him Bholenath! Bholenath!

Ganga on his head

And around his neck snakes form a path

He is such a simple soul

All call him Bholenath! Bholenath!

No ceiling and no wall

No thatched roof hovel to live in

You will find nothing to eat there

Only warriors making a din

No ceiling and no wall

No thatched roof hovel to live in

You will find nothing to eat there

Only warriors making a din

Wanders dressed as an ascetic

What more can I tell you dear girl

He’s accompanied by beasts

And owns nothing but his skin

And owns nothing but his skin

Why so obstinate

Why meditate

Why so obstinate

Why so desperate

For such a weird groom

Yes, for such a weird groom

Ganga on his head

And around his neck snakes form a path

Ganga on his head

And around his neck snakes form a path

He is such a simple soul

All call him Bholenath! Bholenath!

Ganga on his head

And around his neck snakes form a path

He is such a simple soul

All call him Bholenath! Bholenath!

Shambhu!

Shiva Shambhu!

Bholenath!

He never combs his long-matted hair

Appears terribly fearful

A crescent moon on his head

And this Shankar rides a bull

He never combs his long-matted hair

Appears terribly fearful

A crescent moon on his head

And this Shankar rides a bull

His devotion is to Rama

He doesn’t want a wife

He has vanquished the Love God

He knows not married life

Yes, he knows not married life

Why so obstinate

Why so desperate

Why so obstinate

Why meditate

For such a weird groom

Dear girl, for such a weird groom

Ganga on his head

And around his neck snakes form a path

Ganga on his head

And around his neck snakes form a path

He is such a simple soul

All call him Bholenath! Bholenath!

Ganga on his head

And around his neck snakes form a path

He is such a simple soul

All call him Bholenath! Bholenath!
