The song first
appeared in Vasu Bhagnani produced Biwi No. 1 (1999) starring Salman
Khan and Sushmita Sen. The other credits went to singers Abhijeet Bhattacharya
and Anuradha Sriram, composer Anu Malik, and lyricist Sameer. The movie was
directed by David Dhawan.
The original recording was used in Monsoon Wedding (2001) during the family's sangeet celebration, where cousin Ayesha Verma (Neha Dubey) performs a lively dance.
In May 2026, director David Dhawan revisited the song for his movie Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. The new remix version was released as Chunnari Chunnari – Let's Go. Varun Dhawan played the male lead, but there were two females accompanying him, Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur. The ensemble of singers included IP Singh, Jonita Gandhi, Asees Kaur, Sudhir Yaduvanshi, and the original Anuradha Sriram. Credits to the original composer and lyricist were retained but credits for the remix were given to Akshay & IP Singh (composers) and IP Singh (lyricist)
Following the release of Chunnari Chunnari – Let's Go, Vashu Bhagnani alleged unauthorized use of the song. However, the makers of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai denied wrongdoing and maintained that they had the necessary rights. It appears that legal proceedings were initiated but at the time of writing the movie is set for release on June 5, 2026.
Translating “Chunnari”
A chunnari is
the long scarf traditionally worn by Indian women across their shoulders. There
is no precise English equivalent, so I have retained the original Hindi word in
this translation. Chunnari recurs throughout the song. It occurs
repeatedly in the chorus, where it is delivered in a staccato, rhythmic fashion.
Therefore, substituting another word would disrupt both the rhythm and the
musicality.
In the broader Indian social context, and particularly within the conventions of Hindi cinema, forcibly touching a woman's chunnari is often portrayed as an act of harassment or molestation. This song playfully turns that convention on its head. Here, the girls teasingly invite the young man to touch their chunnaris, while he responds that he can romance them only if they grant him that permission. The result is a light-hearted flirtation built on mutual attraction rather than unwanted advances, giving the song much of its playful charm.
