Setting the Background for Chhoti Si Kahani Se
Romantic relationships often begin with small delights and the promise of shared happiness ahead. Along the way, there are bound to be blips in the form of complaints and moments of angst, yet this bittersweet companionship usually endures. Sometimes, though, graver challenges arise, capable of driving permanent wedges between partners. Infidelity, for instance, can turn what began as a fairy tale into a nightmare.
This captures the essence of Chhoti Si Kahani Se, though Gulzar expresses it through his inimitable metaphorical lens, comparing life to rain. When it drizzles softly and departs, it brings joy and freshness. But when the rain swells into a torrential flood, it drowns every bit of happiness in its path.
Ironically, this beautiful song came into being by chance. While Gulzar and Rahul Dev Burman were collaborating on Ijaazat, a tune lodged itself in the music composer’s mind, one he simply was not able to put aside. He shared it with Gulzar, and together they crafted this song. Yet it found no place in the film’s original screenplay, despite mirroring its story perfectly. Gulzar, who also directed the film, decided to weave it into the background instead. The opening verse appears with the initial titles, with subsequent ones emerging at key emotional junctures. The visuals and lyrics blend seamlessly, creating a deeply holistic, immersive experience.
The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Chhoti Si Kahani Se
From a story very small
Starting from a light
rainfall
Floods engulfed the
full valley
From a story very small
Starting from a light
rainfall
Floods engulfed the
full valley
I don’t know why
Heart felt heavy
I don’t know why
Eyes were teary
Branches dressed in
leaves green
On each leaf drops
were seen
Water drops limpid
clear
Like my eyes brimmed
with tear
Branches dressed in
leaves green
On each leaf drops
were seen
Water drops limpid
clear
Like my eyes brimmed
with tear
From a story very small
Starting from a light
rainfall
Floods engulfed the
full valley
I don’t know why
Heart felt heavy
I don’t know why
Eyes were teary
There was angst and
regret
We had just earlier
met
Met and then stood
apart
Yet remained close in
heart
There was angst and
regret
We had just earlier
met
Met and then stood
apart
Yet remained close in
heart
From a story very small
Starting from a light
rainfall
Floods engulfed the
full valley
I don’t know why
Heart felt heavy
I don’t know why
Eyes were teary
Pauses holds for a bit
Then rains without
limit
Clouds follow their
own way
Rain pours down all
the day
Pauses holds for a bit
Then rains without
limit
Clouds follow their
own way
Rain pours down all
the day
From a story very small
Starting from a light
rainfall
Floods engulfed the
full valley
From a story very small
Starting from a light
rainfall
Floods engulfed the
full valley
I don’t know why
Heart felt heavy
I don’t know why
Eyes were teary

The Literal English Translation of the Lyrics of Chhoti Si Kahani Se
From a small story
From the waters of the
rain
The entire valley got flooded
I don’t know why
Sadness filled my
heart
I don’t know why
Tears filled my eyes
There were leaves on the branches
There were drops on
the leaves
There was water in the
drops
There were tears in
the water
There were complaints in the heart
We had met earlier
After meeting we
became strangers
Two people close
together
It stops it slows down
Sometimes it pours
Stepping on the clouds
The rain eagerly
(falls)
