Justaju Jis Ki Thi Translation of Ghazal from Umrao Jaan

Justaju Jis Ki Thi – Poetic Translation of Bollywood Ghazal

Meta Description:  Justaji Jis Ki Thi is a classic ghazal from the Bollywood film Umrao Jaan (1981) with Rekha in the title role. Enjoy the translation set to the original music.

Setting the Background for Translating Justaju Jis Ki Thi

Umrao Jaan was one of the most celebrated courtesans of her era. Among her many patrons, Nawab Sultan was the most devoted, and over time, their bond deepened into love. Yet, succumbing to societal pressures, the Nawab was ultimately forced to marry someone of his own social standing. In a poignant moment, Umrao Jaan performs Justaju Jis Ki Thi before the Nawab and his new bride. This exquisitely composed ghazal is a powerful expression of her sorrow, directed at the Nawab, but to his wife, it is just another ghazal. This situation has created some of Bollywood’s most iconic songs, including the timeless Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh.

Umrao Jaan is often remembered by her full name, Umrao Jaan Adaa. The term “Adaa” in the final verse of the song is a direct reference to herself, a personal pseudonym, and should not be mistaken for the common noun meaning "grace."

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Justaju Jis Ki Thi

The love that I sought, that love

I could not make my own

The love that I sought, that love

I could not make my own

But because of this love the

Entire world I have known

The love that I sought

I have not stained your honour

I have not stained your honour

Nor have brought shame to myself

To the sanctity

To the sanctity of love

Respect I have shown

To the sanctity of love

Respect I have shown

The love that I sought

When did we meet where did we part ways

When did we meet where did we part ways

I do not recall

Life I have seen you

Life I have seen you only

In my dreams I bemoan

Life I have seen you only

In my dreams I bemoan

The love that I sought

Oh Adaa what

Oh Adaa what else can I

Portray about my state

The long journey of life I

The long journey of life I

Have traversed all alone

The long journey of life I

Have traversed all alone

The love that I sought, that love

I could not make my own

But because of this love the

Entire world I have known

The love that I sought

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Justaju Jis Ki Thi from Umrao Jaan (1981)

Justaju jis ki thi us ko
To naa paya hum ne
Justaju jis ki thi us ko
To naa paya hum ne
Is bahaane se magar dekh
Li duniyaan hum ne
Justaju jis ki thi

Tujh ko rusawaa naa kiya
Tujh ko rusawaa naa kiya
Khud bhi pashemaan na huye
Ishq ki rasm ko
Ishq ki rasm ko is tarah
Nibhaya hum ne
Ishk ki rasm ko is tarah
Nibhaya hum ne
Justaju jis ki thi

Kab mili thi kaha bichhadi thi
Kab mili thi kaha bichhadi thi
Hame yaad nahi

Zindagi tujh ko to
Zindagi tujh ko to bas
Khwaab mein dekhaa hum ne
Zindagi tujh ko to bas
Khwaab mein dekhaa hum ne
Justaju jis ki thi

Aye adaa aaur
Aye adaa aaur sunaye
Bhi to kya haal apna
Umar kaa lambaa safar
Umar kaa lambaa safar
Tay kiya tanahaa hum ne
Umar kaa lanbaa safar
Tay kiya tanahaa hum ne

Justaju jis ki thi us ko
To naa paya hum ne
Is bahaane se magar
Dekh li duniyaan hum ne
Justaju jis ki thi.

Rusawaa = Defame

Pashemaan = Ashamed

The Literal English Translation of the Lyrics of Justaju Jis Ki Thi

The person that I was searching for

I could not get

But because of this I saw

The entire world (probably through intelligent conversations with her lover about various issues)

I did not besmirch your reputation

Nor felt any guilt

This way the rituals of love

I have maintained

When did I meet and where did we part ways

I do not remember

Life I have only

Seen you in my dreams

Oh Adaa what else can I say

About my state

The long journey of live

I have traversed alone

Chand Sifarish 2006 Filmfare Award Winning Song Translated

Chand Sifarish – Translation of Prasoon Joshi Fanaa Lyrics

Meta Description:  Chand Sifarish is a popular Eid Bollywood song from Yash Raj film Fanna. It has won best lyrics at the 2006 Filmfare Awards. Enjoy this poetic translation.

Setting the Background for Translating Chand Sifarish

While searching for an Eid-themed Bollywood song to translate, I was surprised to find that nothing quite captured the true spirit of Eid. Although there were songs focused on the moon or imbued with Sufi themes, none seemed to encapsulate the essence of the festive occasion. However, Chand Sifarish appeared consistently at the top of most lists, so I decided to choose it for this special translation.

In the song, Zooni, portrayed by Kajol, is a blind Kashmiri girl vacationing in Delhi with her friends. Rehan, played by Aamir Khan, is their tour guide. The song is a foot tapping Bollywood number where Rehan romantically woos Zooni. Beneath the light hearted pleas, there is an underlying sense of foreboding in the lyrics, penned by Prasoon Joshi. This is revealed only as the story unfolds. Without giving away too much (spoiler alert!), the narrative follows Zooni as she regains her sight, marries Rehan, and eventually discovers that he is a terrorist, having staged his own death in a blast.

Translating “Subhaan Allah”

The song’s connection to Eid, albeit a tenuous one, lies in the repeated refrain of "Subhaan Allah." Literally, Subhaan Allah translates to “God is perfect” or "Glory be to God." While these meanings do not directly align with the romantic nature of the song, the phrase is often used colloquially as an expression of awe when witnessing something or someone exceptionally beautiful. I have chosen to translate Subhaan Allah in this context, to capture Rehan’s reaction to Zooni.

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Chand Sifarish

Hmm hmm hmm hmmm la la la

Hey hey hey hey ah ha

O beautiful O beautiful

O beautiful O beautiful

O beautiful O beautiful

O beautiful O beautiful

Hooray Hooray

Hooray Hooray

Hooray Hooray

Hooray Hooray

If the moon were to reveal my secret this is what would transpire

We would forget all modesty and shame and would fulfil our desire

I want to erase my identity and lose myself within you

If the moon were to reveal my secret this is what would transpire

We would forget all modesty and shame and would fulfil our desire

Hooray Hooray

Hooray Hooray

Your graces are like a gust of fresh breeze let it my body caress

The suppleness of your body delights when against my heart you press

Any excuse to be in your embrace I’ll lose myself within you

If the moon were to reveal my secret this is what would transpire

We would forget all modesty and shame and would fulfil our desire

O beautiful O beautiful

O beautiful O beautiful

O beautiful O beautiful

O beautiful O beautiful

Don’t feel shy when I take you by your arms into my cosy retreat

Do not feel afraid when you listen to my pulsating heart beat

I don’t know how to hide my desires I’ll lose myself within you

If the moon were to reveal my secret this is what would transpire

We would forget all modesty and shame and would fulfil our desire

I want to erase my identity and lose myself within you

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Chand Sifarish from Fanaa

Meanings of Difficult Words

Subhaan allaah = God is perfect (literal); Beautiful (colloquial)

Sifarish = Recommendation

Parde girana = To conceal

Khata = Wrong doing

Fanaa = Annihilation

Lachak = Suppleness

The Literal English Translation of the Lyrics of Chand Sifarish

If the moon would recommend me to you, this is what it would say

Supressing our shyness and shame we have to indulge in some wrong doing (of a romantic nature)

I am obsessed with eliminating myself and merging myself in you

Your graces are like fresh breeze let them touch me and pass

Your suppleness is like a tree bough let it enter my heart

Any excuse to be in your arms and merge myself in you

If l tell you my desires you will be embarrassed

If you listen to my heart beat you will get tensed

I don’t know how to hide my feelings I want to merge myself in you

Kar Har Maidaan Fateh – Translation of Hit Song from Sanju

Meta Description:  Kar Har Maidaan Fateh is a motivational song from Hindi biopic film Sanju.  The song features Ranbir Kapoor and Monisha Koirala. Enjoy the poetic translation.

Setting the Background for Translating Kar Har Maidaan Fateh

Sanju is a biopic that chronicles the tumultuous life of Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt. In one poignant scene, Sanjay is grappling with his drug addiction and struggling to stay on the path of recovery during his rehab. The song Kar Har Maidaan Fateh plays a pivotal role in this moment, acting as a motivational anthem that encourages him to return to the rehabilitation centre. The song is interwoven with Sanjay’s emotional journey, with parts of it sung in the background while in other moments, he imagines his late mother, Nargis, urging him to persevere against all odds.

"Kar Har Maidaan Fateh," which translates to "Win every battle," has become an anthem for any and every struggle or contest. It was sung by Shreya Ghoshal at the opening ceremony of the Indian Premier League 2025 to motivate players to give their best. Galatfehmi Translated from 2005 Bollywood Movie Nadaaniyan

Galatfehmi – Translation of Bollywood Song from Nadaaniyan

Meta Description: Galatfehmi is a song from Bollywood film Nadaaniyan starring Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor. Enjoy the karaoke style translation set to the original score.

Setting the Background for Translating Galatfehmi

‘Galatfehmi’ refers to misunderstanding, while 'nadaaniyan' denotes mistakes made out of ignorance—especially during youth. Together, these terms paint a picture of two young individuals who confuse their youthful infatuations with true love, only to later blame each other for the ensuing complications in their lives. The full significance of this song within the context of the film will become clear when it is released on March 7, 2025.

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Galatfehmi

What has gone wrong now

What has gone wrong now

That till yesterday was alright

O you would hear my heartbeat

I would hold you so tight

What has gone wrong now

What has gone wrong now

That till yesterday was alright

Who could ever guess

That our bonding would be so slight

Romantic kisses lovely ones

Romantic kisses lovely ones

Making promises by the tons

And now you are telling me that

It was mere youthful ignorance

My misunderstanding

My misunderstanding

Was that love for me

Or a cruel showing

My misunderstanding

My misunderstanding

From today onwards

No more of worrying

What has gone wrong now

What has gone wrong now

What has gone wrong

What has gone wrong now

What has gone wrong now

What has gone wrong

The romantic moments that were ours

So beautiful so innocent

It seems they lasted only a few hours

And we do not know where they went

Romantic kisses lovely ones

Romantic kisses lovely ones

Making promises by the tons

And now you are telling me that

It was mere youthful ignorance

My misunderstanding

My misunderstanding

Was that love for me

Or a cruel showing

My misunderstanding

My misunderstanding

From today onwards

I’ll forget everything

The romantic moments that were ours

So beautiful so innocent

It seems they lasted only a few hours

And we do not know where they went

What has gone wrong now

What has gone wrong now

What has gone wrong

What has gone wrong now

What has gone wrong now

What has gone wrong

What has gone wrong now

What has gone wrong now

What has gone wrong

What has gone wrong now

What has gone wrong now

What has gone wrong

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Galatfehmi from Nadaaniyan

kya ho gaya yeh

kya ho gaya yeh

kal hi talak toh sab theek tha

sunta tha meri dhadkan

tu itne nazdeek tha

kya ho gaya yeh

kya ho gaya yeh

kal hi talak toh sab theek tha

kisko pata tha

rishta ye itna baareek tha

ho ke ruaan sa meri jaan

ho ke ruaan sa meri jaan

de ke dilasa meri jaan

keh rahi hai jaane bhi de

theen dilon ki vo nadaaniyaan

ghalatfehmi meri

ghalatfehmi meri

vo tera pyaar tha

ya berahmi teri

ghalatfehmi meri

ghalatfehmi meri

fikr bas aaj se

nahi karni teri

kya ho gaya yeh

kya ho gaya yeh

kya ho gaya

kya ho gaya yeh

kya ho gaya yeh

kya ho gaya

tha beech mein jo apne dilon ke

kitna haseen tha, masoom tha

par khel tha vo kuch hi dinon ka

humko kahaan ye maaloom tha

ho ke ruaan sa meri jaan

ho ke ruaan sa meri jaan

de ke dilasa meri jaan

keh rahi hai jaane bhi de

theen dilon ki wo nadaaniyaan

ghalatfehmi meri

ghalatfehmi meri

vo tera pyaar tha

ya berahmi teri

ghalatfehmi meri

ghalatfehmi meri

khabar bas aaj se

nahi rakhni teri

tha beech mein jo apne dilon ke

kitna haseen tha, masoom tha

par khel tha vo kuch hi dinon ka

humko kahaan ye maaloom tha

kya ho gaya yeh

kya ho gaya yeh

kya ho gaya

kya ho gaya yeh

kya ho gaya yeh

kya ho gaya

kya ho gaya yeh

kya ho gaya yeh

kya ho gaya

kya ho gaya yeh

kya ho gaya yeh

kya ho gaya

The Literal English Translation of the Lyrics of Galatfehmi

What has happened

Everything was fine till yesterday

You could hear my heartbeat

You were that close to me

What has happened

Everything was fine till yesterday

Who could have known

That our relationship was so fragile

Feeling ecstatic my love

Giving solace my love

Now you say let it go

Those were just ignorant mistakes

It was my misunderstanding

Whether that was your love

Or your cruelty

It was my misunderstanding

From today

I will not worry about you

What was between our hearts

Was beautiful and innocent

But it was a game for a few days

We did not realise that

It was my misunderstanding

Whether that was your love

Or your cruelty

It was my misunderstanding

From today

I will not keep track of you
