Gulzar, who also directed the film, decided to weave it into the background instead. The opening verse appears with the initial titles, with subsequent ones emerging at key emotional junctures. Literally, behtar translates as “better,” and dil behtar hua as “the heart became better.” One advantage of retaining “better” is its close phonetic echo of behtar. In English, however, a “heart becoming better” tends to suggest medical recovery rather than an emotional shift, which makes it slightly misleading in this context.

 

I therefore felt the need to choose a different word. Unfortunately, no single English equivalent fully captures the delicate blend of joy, reassurance, and quiet relief conveyed in the song. After considering alternatives such as “richer” and “fuller,” I settled on “lighter,” as it carries a sense of emotional release and gentle uplift.
