The English Translation of the Lyrics of O Maahi

My love, I hope that I will find

A place in your story

And in your silences, I hope

That of me you worry

Wherever you may choose to go

There you will find me

The refuge of your arms is the

goal of my journey

O my love, O my love, O my love, O my love

O my love, O my love, O my love, O my love

To you I have sworn my fidelity

O my love, O my love

O my love, O my love, O my love, O my love

O my love, O my love, O my love, O my love

Pledge my love to you till eternity

Pledge my love to you till eternity

Your whispered sweet nothings

Romantic embracings

Are serenity

Those paths are not taken

Those moments forsaken

When you’re not with me

Life is short, the cup of my love overflows

How will it become yours I wonder who knows

I surrender to you my joys and sorrows

My sighs my embraces

My most private spaces

All my lows and my highs

All my truths and my lies

To you I have sworn my destiny

O my love, O my love

O my love, O my love, O my love, O my love

O my love, O my love, O my love, O my love

Pledge my love to you till eternity

O my love, O my love

O my love, O my love, O my love, O my love

O my love, O my love, O my love, O my love

To you I have sworn my fidelity

Pledge my love to you till eternity

Pledge my love to you till eternity

Pledge my love to you till eternity

To you I have sworn my destiny

Pledge my love to you till eternity

O my love, O my love

The Original Hindi Lyrics of O Maahi by Irshad Kamil

yaara teri kahani mein,
ho zikar mera,
kahin teri khamoshi mein,
ho fikar mera,
rukh tera jidhar ka ho,
ho udhar mera,
teri baahon talak hi hai,
yeh safar mera,

o maahi o maahi o maahi o maahi,
o maahi o maahi o maahi o maahi,
meri wafa pe haq hua tera,
o maahi maahi ve,
o maahi o maahi o maahi o maahi,
o maahi o maahi o maahi o maahi,
lo main kayamat tak hua tera,
lo main kayamat tak hua tera,

baaton ko behne do,
baahon mein rehne do,
hai sukoon inme,
raste woh begaane,
jhoothe woh afsaane,
tu na ho jinme,

ho thodi umar hai pyar zyada mera,
kaise pata yeh sara tera hoga,
maine mujhe hai tujhko sonpna,

aanhon pe baahon pe,
raahon panahon pe,
aanhon pe baahon pe,
saahon salaahon pe,
mere ishq pe haq hua tera,

o maahi maahi ve,
o maahi o maahi o maahi o maahi,
o maahi o maahi o maahi o maahi,
lo main kayamat tak hua tera,

o maahi maahi ve,
o maahi o maahi o maahi o maahi,
o maahi o maahi o maahi o maahi,
meri wafa pe haq hua tera,
lo main kayamat tak hua tera.

Saahon Salaahon Pe – An Explanation

There is a line in the song – saahon salaahon pe, which I have not translated. Salaah means advice, the intent being I will advise you in every way. The dictionary meaning of saah is aristocrat (probably as a variant of shah), which makes absolutely no sense in the context. My guess is that the lyricist Irshad Kamil meant saason meaning breaths and used saahon for rhyming purposes. Instead of going for the literal translation of “on my breaths and advices” I have used “all my truths all my lies” because I felt that was more appropriate to the tempo and mood in English. This is an example of transcreation of poetry.
