Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon – Translation of Patriotic Song

Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon – Translation of Patriotic Song

Meta Description:  Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon is a patriotic song that honours the soldiers perished in the Chinese invasion of India. It was written by Kavi Pradeep and sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Enjoy the English translation of popular Hindi songs at Bollywood Translations.

The Context of Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon

When China invaded India in the winter of 1962, the Indian Government was caught unawares, particularly because the then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, had considered China as an ally. The Indian soldiers were not equipped to combat the Chinese military superiority or the freezing winter in the Himalayas and did not have a chance of survival.

After the war, Bollywood stepped in to organise a fund raiser and Kavi Pradeep penned this heart rendering tribute to the martyrdom of the valiant heroes. Lata Mangeshkar, the iconic singer, lent her mellifluous voice to the poignant words before a packed audience at the National Stadium in New Delhi on 26th January 1963, when India celebrates her Republic Day.

The English Translation of the Lyrics of Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon

O people of my country, salute this day with fervour

Let us all get together, to unfurl our dear tricolour

But on our country’s borders, heroes have given their lives

Bow down to their families, bow down to their families

Their mothers, their sons their wives, their mothers, their sons their wives

O people of my country, with tears please moisten your eyes

Those who have been martyred, let’s honour their sacrifice

O people of my country, with tears please moisten your eyes

Those who have been martyred, let’s honour their sacrifice

The Himalayas were invaded, our freedom was put at stake

They fought till their last breath

They fought till their last breath, and only then did death’s hand shake

With heads on their bayonets, they paid the ultimate price

Those who have been martyred, let’s honour their sacrifice

When we were in festive mood, they suffered miseries untold

When we were safe in our homes

When we were safe in our homes, they lay in the freezing cold

Most blessed were our soldiers, and most blessed were their lives

Those who have been martyred, let’s honour their sacrifice

They came from different regions, they came from different regions

From different lots they were cast, from different lots they were cast

He who died on the border

He who died on the border was an Indian first and last

It was Indian blood and guts that spilled on the mountain highs

Those who have been martyred, let’s honour their sacrifice

They did not stop their firing, though in a bloodied state

Took down as many as they could and then succumbed to their fate

In their dying moments

In their dying moments they spoke with sincerity

In their dying moments they spoke with sincerity

We are going to our maker, we are going to our maker

You remain blessed and free, you remain blessed and free

The men were valiant and proud forever we’ll idolize

Those who have been martyred, let’s honour their sacrifice

We keep repeating this tale, their heroism to memorize

Those who have been martyred, let’s honour their sacrifice

Salute, the Indian army

Salute, the Indian army

Salute, Salute, Salute

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Ay Mere Watan Ke Logon

Ae mere watan ke logon, tum khub laga lo naara
Ye shubh din hai hum sab ka, lehara lo tiranga pyara
Par mat bhulo seema par, veeron ne hai praan ganwaye
Kuch yaad unhe bhi kar lo, kuch yaad unhe bhi kar lo
Jo laut ke ghar na aaye, jo laut ke ghar na aaye

Ae mere watan ke logon, jara aankh me bhar lo paani
Jo shaheed huye hain unki, zara yaad karo kurbani
Ae mere watan ke logon, jara aankh me bhar lo paani
Jo shaheed huye hain unki, zara yaad karo kurbani

Jab ghaayal huwa Himalaya, khatare me padi aazadi
Jab tak thi saans lade wo
Jab tak thi saans lade wo, phir apni laash bichha di
Sangin pe dhar kar maatha, so gaye amar balidani
Jo shaheed huye hain unki, zara yaad karo kurbani

Jab desh mein thi Diwali, wo khel rahe the Holi
Jab hum baithe the gharon mein
Jab hum baithe the gharon mein, wo jhel rahe the goli
The dhanya jawan wo apne, thi dhanya wo unki jawani
Jo shaheed huye hain unki, zara yaad karo kurbani

Koyi Sikh koyi Jatt-Maratha, koyi Sikh, koyi Jatt-Maratha
Koyi Gurkha koyi Madrasi, koyi Gurkha koyi Madrasi
Sarhad pe marnewala
Sarhad pe marnewala, har veer tha bharatwaasi
Jo khoon gira parwat par, wo khoon tha hindustani
Jo shaheed huye hain unki, zara yaad karo kurbani

Thi khoon se lath-path kaaya, phir bhi bandook uthaake
Das-das ko ek ne maara, phir gir gaye hosh ganvaake
Jab ant samay aaya to
Jab ant samay aaya to, keh gaye ke ab marte hain
Jab ant samay aaya to, keh gaye ke ab marte hain
Khush rehana desh ke pyaaro, khush rehana desh ke pyaaro
Ab hum to safar karte hain, ab ham to safar karte hain
Kya log the wo diwane, kya log the wo abhimaani
Jo shaheed huye hain unki, jara yaad karo kurbaani

Tum bhool na jaao unko, is liye kahi ye kahani
Jo shaheed huye hain unki, jara yaad karo kurbaani
Jai Hind, Jai Hind ki sena
Jai Hind, Jai Hind ki sena
Jai Hind, Jai Hind, Jai Hind
