Pardesiyon Se: Rafi Sad Translation of Jab Jab Phool Khile
Meta Description: Pardesiyon Se Na Ankhiyan Milana is sung
three times with different lyrics in Jab Jab Phool Khile. This is the
translation of the sad version sung by Rafi.
Setting the Background for Translating Pardesiyon Se Na Ankhiyan Milana (Rafi Sad)
Jab Jab Phool Khile
tells the story of the romance
between Raja (Shashi Kapoor), a Kashmiri boatman, and Rita (Nanda), a wealthy
heiress vacationing in Kashmir. Pardesiyon Se Na Ankhiyan Milana is
first sung when Raja is on the verge of falling in love with Rita, fully aware
of the consequences of giving his heart to an outsider.
The song returns a
second time in Rita's voice. By now she has fallen deeply in love with Raja and
laments how this "foreigner" has compelled her to leave her father's
home and return to Kashmir in search of him.
The couple eventually
marry, and Rita brings Raja to Bombay, where her father attempts to transform
him into a polished gentleman fit for high society. The experiment ends
disastrously. Raja feels increasingly alienated in Rita's world;
misunderstandings and quarrels drive a wedge between them, and he finally
leaves.
The final, melancholy
version of the song is heard when Raja returns. Its lyrics reflect his
bitterness and disillusionment. He declares that foreigners are hard-hearted
people who care little for the feelings of others. They lead artificial lives,
like decorative showpieces, incapable of the simple, natural bonds in which
affection is sustained by mutual giving and receiving.
The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Pardesiyon
Se Na Ankhiyan Milana (Rafi Sad)
Never lock glances with strangers I say
Never lock glances with strangers I say
For strangers are destined to leave one day
Never lock glances with strangers I say
Never lock glances with strangers I say
To win them over with love don’t try
To win them over with love don’t try
They’re stone-hearted they do not cry
They’re stone-hearted they do not cry
Your tears will never make them stay
Never lock glances with strangers I say
Never lock glances with strangers I say
They are not clouds nor stars on high
They are not clouds nor stars on high
They’re paper flowers lifeless and dry
They’re paper flowers lifeless and dry
They aren’t fit for your garden display
Never lock glances with strangers I say
Never lock glances with strangers I say
Once I placed my trust in a stranger
Once I placed my trust in a stranger
Gave him my heart unaware of the danger
Gave him my heart unaware of the danger
My heart cries and laments that they will
betray
Never lock glances with strangers I say
Never lock glances with strangers I say

The Literal English Translation of the Lyrics of Pardesiyon
Se Na Ankhiyan Milana (Rafi Sad)
Never lock glances with strangers I say
For strangers are destined to leave one day
You cannot win
them over with love
They are made of stone they do not cry
Do not waste your tears on them
They are not
clouds they are not stars
They all are paper flowers
Do not set up your garden with these
flowers
I had once done this
before
Had fallen in love
with a foreigner
My crazy heart cries and says this
