Raja (Shashi Kapoor)
is a Kashmiri boatman who has watched generations of tourists come and go,
often forming fleeting attachments with local people before departing without a
second thought. As he rows his shikara across the lake, he sings this song as a
cautionary tale: never lose your heart to strangers.
In the first verse, he
wonders what new romances and heartbreaks will become the talk of the season.
In the second, strangers are likened to migratory birds that descend for a
brief stopover before continuing their journey. In the third, they are compared
to bees that flit from flower to flower during season, only to vanish when
winter arrives.
Yet, despite the
wisdom of his own warning, Raja gradually falls in love with Rita (Nanda), a
wealthy, westernized heiress from the city who has rented his houseboat. The
song thus carries a strong element of foreshadowing: what begins as a general
observation about the nature of strangers becomes a prophecy that will unfold
over the course of the film.
During the 1960s and
1970s there was a practice to include the name of the movie in one of the
songs. The song was then referred to as the title song. This version of Pardesiyon
Se Na Ankhiyan Milana with the phrase “jab jab phool khilenge” is the title
song of the film.
