Translation of Flag Song in Farishtay for National Flag Day

Jhanda Ooncha Rahe Hamara – Lyrical Translation of Flag Song

Meta Description:  Jhanda Ooncha Rahe Hamara, written by Shyamlal Gupta is India’s Flag song. It was used in Farishtay. Enjoy the English translation posted for National Flag Day.

Setting the Background for Translating Jhanda Ooncha Rahe Hamara

India’s Flag Song Jhanda Ooncha Rahe Hamara

Jhanda Ooncha Rahe Hamara, revered as the Flag Song of India, was written by Shyamlal Gupta ‘Parshad’, a well-known freedom fighter and social reformer. The song containing seven stanzas was written in March 1924, at the peak of India’s freedom struggle and first publicly sung on April 12, 1924, on the fifth anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. This eulogy of the national flag became an inspiration for the heroes of the freedom struggle and a clarion call for them to sacrifice their all in the unwavering quest for independence.

Jhanda Ooncha Rahe Hamara in Bollywood film Farishtay

The iconic song was reimagined by lyricist Anand Bakshi for the 1991 movie Farishtay. The chorus and opening verse were retained, but the subsequent verses along with the musical composition were altered to suit the requirements of the film. The song appears in two versions in the film. The smaller male version is sung by Shabbir Kumar. The longer female version is sung by Asha Bhosle.

National Flag Day

National Flag Day in India is celebrated annually on July 22 to commemorate the adoption of the present-day tricolour flag as the official National Flag of the country by the Constituent Assembly of India in 1947. I have translated the longer Farishtay version in time to be shared on the Flag Day this year. This is Bollywood Translation’s contribution to this momentous occasion.

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Jhanda Ooncha Rahe Hamara

Our flag will forever fly high

The tricolour will rule the sky

Our flag will forever fly high

The tricolour will rule the sky

It blazes with boundless energy

Showers the nectar of harmony

Our heroes salute it proudly

The motherland it will glorify

The motherland it will glorify

Our flag will forever fly high

The tricolour will rule the sky

In our fierce war for independence

At each step it provides effulgence

Enemies tremble in its presence

Troubles and fears it will nullify

Troubles and fears it will nullify

Our flag will forever fly high

The tricolour will rule the sky

Our flag will forever fly high

The tricolour will rule the sky

Our flag will forever fly high

The tricolour will rule the sky

Beneath this flag we proclaim fearless

Our demand for self-rule nothing less

And hail our Mother India dauntless

Freedom is ours now is the cry

Freedom is ours now is the cry

Our flag will forever fly high

The tricolour will rule the sky

Come dear heroes come and rejoice

Your country now demands sacrifice

Let us sing together in one voice

O flag this nation please unify

O flag this nation please unify

Our flag will forever fly high

The tricolour will rule the sky

Our flag will forever fly high

The tricolour will rule the sky

Our flag will forever fly high

The tricolour will rule the sky

We will forever guard its honour

Even our lives if we have to martyr

We will see it as a world victor

Our cherished goal it will satisfy

Our cherished goal it will satisfy

Our flag will forever fly high

The tricolour will rule the sky

It blazes with boundless energy

Showers the nectar of harmony

Our heroes salute it proudly

The motherland it will glorify

The motherland it will glorify

Our flag will forever fly high

The tricolour will rule the sky

Our flag will forever fly high

The tricolour will rule the sky

Our flag will forever fly high

The tricolour will rule the sky

The Literal English Translation of the Lyrics of Jhanda Ooncha Rahe Hamara

Let our flag fly high

The world victor beloved tricolour

Always displaying strength

Showering the nectar of love

Gladdening the brave hearts

The entire body and soul of the motherland

In the fierce war for independence

We move ahead with enthusiasm in each particle

Seeing us, the enemy shivers in their minds

All our fears and troubles are erased

Fearless beneath this flag

We demand independence is our unwavering decision

Proclaim glory to Mother India

Freedom is our objective

Cone dear brave hearts come

Sacrifice yourselves for the country and duty

Together all sing

Beloved is our nation India

Let not the honour of the flag be lost

Even if our lives are lost

Demonstrate that we are the world victors

Only then will our resolve be completed

Mera Rang De Translation of Patriotic Song from Shaheed 1965

Mera Rang De – Poetic Translation of Popular Patriotic Song

Meta Description:  Mera Rang De Basanti Chola is a popular patriotic song. This version is from the Manoj Kumar movie about Bhagat Singh and includes the lesser known third verse.

Setting the Background for Translating Mera Rang De Basanti Chola

The iconic lyrics of Mera Rang De Basanti Chola were originally penned by Ram Prasad Bismil in 1927, while he was imprisoned for his involvement in the Kakori Train Robbery. Along with his fellow revolutionaries, Bismil composed several couplets of this powerful song to ignite the spirit of patriotism and revolutionary fervour among his comrades. It is said that Bhagat Singh, the legendary freedom fighter, was particularly fond of this song and sang it loudly as he walked to the gallows in Lahore Jail on March 23, 1931.

When the film Shaheed, based on Bhagat Singh's life, was being produced in 1965, the filmmakers wanted to feature this iconic song. However, they felt the original verses did not fully capture the depth of emotion and sacrifice required to match the gravity of the story. To bring out the necessary passion and resonance, they turned to the nationalist poet and film lyricist Prem Dhawan, who recreated the song to suit the context of the movie.

Since then, numerous films have been made about Bhagat Singh, and each has featured its own rendition of Mera Rang De Basanti Chola. This translation is based on the version included in the 1965 film Shaheed and it incorporates a third verse that is often omitted in more commonly circulated YouTube versions of the song. If you want any other version of this song translated please let me know in the comments.

The Meaning of “Basanti” in the Context of the Song

Top of Form

Bismil wrote this song during the spring season, which is why he used the word basanti, literally meaning "of spring." However, in the context of the song, basanti is interpreted as referring to the colour saffron, a hue deeply embedded in Indian tradition, symbolizing courage and sacrifice—two qualities that defined the revolutionaries who fought against British colonial rule.

It is natural to wonder about the connection between basanti and saffron. Traditionally, the colour of spring in India is associated with a lighter shade of yellow. Many articles on the Internet attempt to establish a link between basanti and saffron, but the connections are weak or contrived. If you have any insights into this intriguing conundrum, please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!

Bottom of Form

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Mera Rang De Basanti Chola

O My cloak please dye in saffron my cloak

My cloak please dye

O My cloak please dye in saffron my cloak oye

Please dye in saffron my cloak Mother

Please dye in saffron my cloak

O My cloak please dye in saffron my cloak

My cloak please dye

O My cloak please dye in saffron my cloak oye

Please dye in saffron my cloak Mother

Please dye in saffron my cloak

I yield my life for this country

That is my only wish

I yield my life for this country

That is my only wish

Better than a hundred births

Is for freedom to perish

Seeing the valiant martyr their lives

Seeing the valiant martyr their lives

O my heart also spoke

My cloak please dye in saffron my cloak

O My cloak please dye in saffron my cloak

My cloak please dye

O My cloak please dye in saffron my cloak oye

Please dye in saffron my cloak Mother

Please dye in saffron my cloak

This is the cloak that Shivaji wore

And then he flirted with death

This is the cloak that Shivaji wore

And then he flirted with death

Rani of Jhansi wore this cloak

And fought till her last breath

Now the feeling of patriotism in

Of patriotism in

Now the feeling of patriotism in

Us this cloak does evoke

My cloak please dye in saffron my cloak

O My cloak please dye in saffron my cloak

My cloak please dye

O My cloak please dye in saffron my cloak oye

Please dye in saffron my cloak Mother

Please dye in saffron my cloak

Friends the stigma of slavery is

A deep indelible stain

Friends the stigma of slavery is

A deep indelible stain

The person’s life is valueless

Whose country is in chains

The heart that was beating within me

The heart that was beating within me

Has now flared up in smoke

My cloak please dye in saffron my cloak

O My cloak please dye in saffron my cloak

My cloak please dye

O My cloak please dye in saffron my cloak oye

Please dye in saffron my cloak Mother

Please dye in saffron my cloak

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Mera Rang De Basanti Chola from Shaheed (1965)

O Mera Rang De Basanti Chola

Mera Rang De

O Mera Rang De Basanti Chola Oye

Rang De Basanti Chola Maaye

Rang De Basanti Chola

O Mera Rang De Basanti Chola

Mera Rang De

O Mera Rang De Basanti Chola Oye

Rang De Basanti Chola Maaye

Rang De Basanti Chola…………..

Dum Nikle Is Desh Ki Khaatir

Bus Itna Armaan Hai

Dum Nikle Is Desh Ki Khaatir

Bus Itna Armaan Hai

Ek Baar Is Raah Me Marna

Sau Janmon Ke Samaan Hai

Dekh Ke Veeron Ki Quarbaani

Dekh Ke Veeron Ki Quarbaani

Apna Dil Bhi Bola

Mera Rang De Basanti Chola

O Mera Rang De Basanti Chola

Mera Rang De

O Mera Rang De Basanti Chola Oye

Rang De Basanti Chola Maaye

Rang De Basanti Chola………..

Jis Chole Ko Pehan Shivaji

Khele Apni Jaan Pe

Jis Chole Ko Pehan Shivaji

Khele Apni Jaan Pe

Jise Pehan Jhansi Ki Rani

Mit Gayi Apni Aan Pe

Aaj Usi Ko Pehan Ke Nikla

Pehan Ke Nikla

Aaj Usi Ko Pehan Ke Nikla

Hum Maston Ka Tola

Mera Rang De Basanti Chola

O Mera Rang De Basanti Chola

Mera Rang De

O Mera Rang De Basanti Chola Oye

Rang De Basanti Chola

Maaye Rang De Basanti Chola……………

Bada Hi Ghehra Daag Hai Yaaron

Jiska Ghulami Naam Hai

Bada Hi Ghehra Daag Hai Yaaron

Jiska Ghulami Naam Hai

Uska Jeena Bhi Kya Jeena

Jiska Desh Ghulam Hai

Seene Mein Jo Dil Tha Yaaron

Seene Mein Jo Dil Tha Yaaron

Aaj Bana Vo Shola

Mera Rang De Basanti Chola

O Mera Rang De Basanti Chola

Mera Rang De

O Mera Rang De Basanti Chola Oye

Rang De Basanti Chola Maaye

Rang De Basanti Chola……………

Meanings of Important Words

Basanti = Of spring (here: colour saffron)

Chola = Cloak

Shivaji = The Maratha Emperor who sought to free India from Mughal rule

Jhansi Ki Rani = The Queen of Jhansi who fought the British in 1857 and died on the battlefield

Aan = Honour

Tola = Group of people

The Literal English Translation of the Lyrics of Mera Rang De Basanti Chola

Dye my cloak in saffron colour

That I die for this country

Is my only wish

To die once in this path (towards freedom)

Is equal to a hundred lives

After seeing the sacrifices made by the brave

My heart also said

Dye my cloak in saffron colour

The cloak that Shivaji wore

And risked his life

Wearing that the Queen of Jhansi

Faced an honourable death

Today wearing that same cloak

Is our carefree group

Dye my cloak in saffron colour

Friends that stain is very dark

Whose name is slavery

What is the value of that life

When the country is enslaved

Friends the heart that was in this chest

Today is a burning ember

Dye my cloak in saffron colour

Desh Mere Patriotic Song Translated of Bhuj by Arijit Singh

Desh Mere: Poetic Translation of Arijit Singh Patriotic Song

Meta Description:  Desh Mere is from the best Bollywood patriotic songs. It is from Bhuj and sung by Arijit Singh. Enjoy the poetic translation of the lyrics by Manoj Muntashir.

Setting the Background for Translating Desh Mere

Bhuj: The Pride of India is based on real events set during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Indian Air Force Squadron Leader Vijay Karnik, with the help of 300 local women repair the damaged runway in 72 hours, while a small contingent of the Indian Army prevents the territory being overrun by the enemy.

The song Desh Mere is a simple tribute to the members of the armed forces who make the supreme sacrifice for the mother land. It runs in the background with an ensemble of cast on the screen.

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Desh Mere

O country mine

I bow to your glory

Greater than your soil

What wealth can there be

By your winds I’m sustained

By your sunlight I’m nurtured

You’re my paradise

And I am your bird

This is a patriot’s plea

Where I have seen the dawn’s beauty

There one day let my life’s sun set

If the world remembers those lives

That have made the sacrifice

Then my name let it never forget

O country mine

I bow to your glory

Greater than your soil

What wealth can there be

By your winds I’m sustained

By your sunlight I’m nurtured

You’re my paradise

And I am your bird

Let coloured vestments mother

Your form sanctify

Let your tricolour

Soar high above the sky

If you say, for you I will live

If you want my life I will give

I’ll play the part for me you conceive

Whether it is the silken shawl

Or the soldier’s funeral pall

I’ll wear whatever you weave

O country mine

I bow to your glory

Greater than your soil

What wealth can there be

By your winds I’m sustained

By your sunlight I’m nurtured

You’re my paradise

And I am your bird

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Desh Mere from Bhuj: The Pride of India

o desh mere
teri shaan pe sadke
koyi dhan hai kya
teri dhool se badh ke

teri dhoop se raushan
teri hawa pe jinda
tu baag hai mera
main tera parinda

hai arz yeh deewane ki
jahan bhor suhani dekhi
ik roz wahin meri shaam ho

kabhi yaad kare jo zamana
maati pe mar mit jaana
zikar mein shamil mera naam ho

o desh mere
teri shaan pe sadke
koyi dhan hai kya
teri dhool se badh ke

teri dhoop se raushan
teri hawa pe jinda
tu baag hai mera
main tera parinda

aanchal tera rahe maa
rang biranga
uncha aasman se
ho tera tiranga

jeene ki ijazat dede
ya hukum shahadat dede
manjoor humein jo bhi tu chune

resham ka ho vo dushala
ya kafan sipahi wala
odhenge hum jo bhi tu bune

o desh mere
teri shaan pe sadke
koyi dhan hai kya
teri dhool se badh ke

teri dhoop se raushan
teri hawa pe jinda
tu baag hai mera
main tera parinda
