Sahir Ludhianvi Songs Lyrics from Kabhie Kabhie in English

Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar – English Translation of Sahir Hit Song

Meta Description:  Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hoon is a hit song from Kabhie Kabhie.  It has inputs from Sahir Ludhianvi, Khayyam, and Mukesh. Sing the translation karaoke style.

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Main Har Ek Pal Ka Shayar Hoon

Poets come and poets go and each new generations brings its own style that consigns the earlier ones to the vaults of time.

I have fifteen seconds of fame

Transient is my situation

Transient is my existence

And transient is my youth’s passion

I have fifteen seconds of fame

Many poets came before me

Some left and others were sent away

Some could not put their pain in words

Some finished their songs and went away

They enjoyed their moments of fame

Just as I’m enjoying a few

Tomorrow I’ll be all alone

Today I am a part of you

I have fifteen seconds of fame

Tomorrow will bring another

Bouquets of songs fresh and new

Poets more skilled than me with words

Patrons more discerning than you

Why should anyone remember me

Why should my songs anymore be heard

To hope that this fast paced world

Will spare time for me – that is absurd.

I have fifteen seconds of fame

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hoon

Main pal do pal ka shayar hoon

Pal do pal meri kahani hai
Pal do pal meri hasti hai

Pal do pal meri jawani hai
Main pal do pal ka shayar hoon

Mujhse pahale kitne shayar

Aaye aur aakar chale gaye
Kuch aahen bhar kar laut gaye

Kuch nagme gaakar chale gaye
Wo bhi ek pal ka kissa the

Main bhi ek pal ka kissa hoon
Kal tumse juda ho jaunga

Wo aaj tumhara hissa hoon

Main pal do pal ka shayar hoon

Kal aur aayegen nagmo ki

Khilati kaliya chunane wale
Mujhse behatar kahane wale

Tumse behatar sunane wale
Kal koi mujhko yaad kare

Kyon koi mujhko yaad kare
Masaruf zamana mere liye

Kyon waqt apna barabad kare

Main pal do pal ka shayar hoon

 Masaruf = busy

Sahir Ludhianvi Songs Lyrics from Kabhie Kabhie in English

Har Ek Pal Ka Shayar – English Translation of Sahir Hit Song

Meta Description:  Main Har Ek Pal Ka Shayar Hoon is a Bollywood song from Kabhie Kabhie.  It is among the last works of three legends – Sahir Ludhianvi, Khayyam, and Mukesh.

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Main Har Ek Pal Ka Shayar Hoon

This song from the pen of Sahir Ludhianvi is an ode to the eternal existence of a poet through his poetry. Long after the poet passes away, the poetry still rules the hearts. The parallel song from this pair, which is also featured at Bollywood Translations, is an ode to the ephemeral existence of a poet.

I am a poet for all seasons

Eternal is my situation

Eternal is my existence

And eternal is my youth’s passion

I am a poet for all seasons

The forms of alliances do change

But stable is their foundation

For one’s dreams and aspirations

Never will be expiration

My youth resides in one flower

Another flower reveals your symmetry

One face is my identity

One face is your identity

I am a poet for all seasons

Eternal is my situation

Eternal is my existence

And eternal is my youth’s passion

I am a poet for all seasons

We’ve to drink the nectar of life

Through the medium of poetry

Its heartbeats will be our heartbeats

And in its rhythms be serenity

Your coquetry will be its muse

Which I will faithfully observe

I will bless my poetry with all

That I thought I once did deserve

I am a poet for all seasons

Eternal is my narration

Eternal is my existence

And eternal is my passion

I am a poet for all seasons

Eternal is my narration

Eternal is my existence

And eternal is my passion

I am a poet for all seasons

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Main Har Ek Pal Ka Shayar Hoon

Main har ek pal ka shayar hoon

Har ek pal meri kahani hai

Har ek pal meri hasti hai

Har ek pal meri jawani hai

Main har ek pal ka shayar hoon

Rishton ka roop badalta hai

Buniyadein khatam nahi hoti

Khwaabon ki aur umango ki

Miyadein khatam nahi hoti

Ek phool mein tera roop basa

Ek phool mein meri jawani hai

Ek chehra teri nishani hai

Ek chehra meri nishani hai

Main har ek pal ka shayar hoon

Har ek pal meri kahani hai

Har ek pal meri hasti hai

Har ek pal meri jawani hai

Main har ek pal ka shayar hoon

Tujhko mujhko jeevan amrit

Ab in haathon se peena hai

Inki dhadkan mein basna hai

Inke saanson mein jeena hai

Tu apni adayein baksh inhe

Main apni wafaein deta hoon

Joh apne liye sochi thi kabhi

Woh saari duayein deta hoon

Main har ek pal ka shayar hoon

Har ek pal meri kahani hai

Har ek pal meri hasti hai

Har ek pal meri jawani hai

Main har ek pal ka shayar hoon

Har ek pal meri kahani hai

Har ek pal meri hasti hai

Har ek pal meri jawani hai

Main har ek pal ka shayar hoon

Kabhie Kabhie was a box office blockbuster, whose success was almost entirely driven by a fabulous soundtrack. The three main contributors were the music composer Khayyam, the lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi, and the main playback singer Mukesh (who sang for Amitabh Bachchan). All three of them were declared best in their respective categories in the 24th Filmfare Awards. Sahir Ludhianvi and Mukesh received their awards, not for this song, but for the title number Kabhie Kabhie Mere Dil Mein. This was the last major output from each of these legends. We have only one other Sahir song at Bollywood Translations, Sansar Ki Har Shay, but there will be more to come. Next is Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hoon.

Nida Fazli Ghazal from Silsila Translated to English

Nida Fazli Silsila Ghazal Left Out of the Bollywood Film

Meta Description:  Nida Fazli ghazal Khud se jo vada kiya tha was sung by Pamela Chopra. It was not included in Silsila. Enjoy the English translation of the original lyrics.

Setting the Context for Khud se jo vada kiya tha in Silsila

This poignant ghazal penned by Nida Fazli and sung by Pamela Chopra was released with the soundtrack of Silsila. However, the song did not find a place in the movie when it was released in the theatres. Judging from the lyrics of the ghazal and the narrative of the movie one can assess that the song must have been picturised on Chandni (Rekha). When Amit (Amitabh Bachchan) regrets that he cannot marry Chandni, she had resolved to remove him from her life. But when she sees Amit again years later, she realises that her love for him has not been erased. Both Chandni and Amit are married to others at this time and their refuelled romance not acceptable to society.

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Khud Se Jo Vada Kiya Tha

I could not fulfil the promise to myself I had enshrined

I could not fulfil the promise to myself I had enshrined

I tried my best but could not erase your image from my mind

I could not fulfil the promise to myself I had enshrined

What connects these two broken dreams I can only wonder

What connects these two broken dreams I can only wonder

He who is mine but I could not in a relationship bind

He who is mine but I could not in a relationship bind

I was at the very place where once you left me alone

I was at the very place where once you left me alone

But after these years alas our meeting place you could not find

But after these years alas our meeting place you could not find

Seeing you my eyes began to shed tears on their own

Seeing you my eyes began to shed tears on their own

I could not conceal our secrets and now we are maligned

I could not conceal our secrets and now we are maligned

I tried my best but could not erase your image from my mind

I could not fulfil the promise to myself I had enshrined

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Khud Se Jo Vada from Silsila

Khud Se Jo Vada Kiya Tha, Vo Nibhaya Na Gaya

Hum Ne Chaha To Bahut Tumko Bhulaya Na Gaya

Kaisa Rishta Hai, Yeh Jo Toote Hue Khwabon Ka

Vo Hi Apne Hain, Jinhe Apna Banaya Na Gaya

Tum Ne Chhoda Tha Jahan Humko, Vahin The Ab Tak

Hum Jahan Milte, Vahan Tumse Hi Aaya Na Gaya

Aap Hi Aap Barasne Lagi Aakhen Kaise

Tumko Dekha To, Koyi Raaz Chhupaya Na Gaya

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Hazaar Rahein

Kishore:

I wandered down thousands of paths

I just could not hear you calling for me

Lata:

With righteousness you have responded

To a small moment of my disloyalty

Kishore:

At that turn from where you left me

At that turn from where you left me

I am still there waiting for you

Lata:

My feet were bound by numerous chains

My feet were bound by numerous chains

I wanted to come but what could I do

With righteousness you have responded

To a small moment of my disloyalty

Kishore:

If only you had once gone through

If only you had once gone through

The torments that have troubled my mind

Lata:

Those nights that I have spent all by myself

Those nights that I have spent all by myself

If only you had gone through that grind

With righteousness you have responded

To a small moment of my disloyalty

Kishore:

She insisted that I should call her first

For her signal I was waiting

Lata:

His name was always on my two lips

My voice failed me so frustrating

Kishore:

I wandered down thousands of paths

I just could not hear you calling for me

Lata:

With righteousness you have responded

To a small moment of my disloyalty

To a small moment of my disloyalty

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Hazaar Rahein from Thodisi Bewafaii

Hazaar rahein mud ke dekhi

Kahin se koi sada na aayi

Badi wafa se nibhaai tumne

Hamari thodi si bewafaii

Jahan se tum mod mud gaye the

Jahan se tum mod mud gaye the

Yeh mod ab bhi wahin pade hain

Hum apne pairon mein jaane kitne

Hum apne pairon mein jaane kitne

Bhanwar lapete hue khade hain

Badi wafa se nibhaai tumne

Hamari thodi si bewafaii

Kahin kisi roz yun bhi hota

Kahin kisi roz yun bhi hota

Hamari haalat tumhari hoti

Jo raatein humne guzari mar ke

Jo raatein humne guzari mar ke

Woh raat tumne guzari hoti

Badi wafa se nibhaai tumne

Hamari thodi si bewafaii

Unhein yeh zid thi ke hum bulaate

Hamein yeh ummeed woh pukarein

Hai naam honthon pe ab bhi lekin

Aawaz mein pad gai daraarein

Hazaar rahein mud ke dekhi

Kahin se koi sada na aayi

Badi wafa se nibhaai tumne

Hamari thodi si bewafaii

Hamari thodi si bewafaii

Sada = Voice

Wafa and Bewafaii Explained in Gulzar’s Hazaar Rahein

Gulzar’s lyrics are poetic and are open to interpretation, and Hazaar Rahein is no different. The words wafa and bewafaii literally translate as loyalty and disloyalty and in the context of Hindi movies they are usually further nuanced to marital fidelity and infidelity. However, the meaning of the entire song falls into place only when these two words are understood in the context of the narrative of the film.

Thodisi Bewafaii explores the marital discord between Arun (Rajesh Khanna) and Neema (Shabana Azmi). The film centres on Neema's mistaken belief that Arun is having an affair, leading her to leave him and return to her father's home after a series of minor disagreements. Neema clings to this misconception until their eventual reconciliation, despite there being no evidence or allegations of Arun’s infidelity. There is not even a hint of allegation of adultery against her. In the song it is Neema who says “hamari thodisi bewafaii” so the word cannot mean infidelity, but only disloyalty in the more general sense.

So, what does Neema mean when she refers to wafa on Arun’s part, especially as it is contrasted with her disloyalty. Although Arun is hurt by Neema’s behaviour, he chooses not to react with hostility or disparagement. His response is mature and measured, leaving the possibility for reconciliation open while waiting for Neema to take the first step. Neema’s own ego, however, prevents her from initiating contact, leading to a stalemate. Gulzar's song poignantly addresses how personal pride and misunderstandings can obstruct reconciliation, resulting in mutual dissatisfaction despite both parties' underlying desires to mend their relationship.

Suno Draupadi – English Translation of Pushyamitra Upadhyay Poem

Suno Draupadi – English Translation of Pushyamitra Upadhyay Poem

Meta Description:  Suno Draupadi is a powerful Hindi poem on the theme of atrocities against women. It uses the disrobing of Draupadi in the epic Mahabharata as the symbol for exploitation of women. In the background of the Kolkata doctor murder case, it is imperative that everyone reads Pushyamitra Upadhyay’s poem.

Digressing from Bollywood Translations with Suno Draupadi

There comes a time, when events around us force us to come out of our comfort zones. The shocking Kolkata rape and murder has jolted us out of our easy chairs, at least it should have, and compelled us to take cognisance of the malaise we have allowed to fester. Pushyamitra Upadhyay’s Suno Draupadi was written after the Nirbhaya tragedy in 2012. That the poem becomes more relevant with each passing year reflects the callous state of our hearts.

The Original Hindi Poem Suno Draupadi by Pushyamitra Upadhyay

Intent and effectiveness necessarily get lost in translation, so I present Pushyamitra’s original work first.

Suno Draupadi! Shastra uthalo ab Govind na aayenge…

Chhodo mehandi khadga sambhalo

Khud hi apana cheer bachalo

Dyut bichhaye baithe Shakuni,

…Mastak sab bik jayenge

Suno Draupadi!

Suno Draupadi! Shastra uthalo ab Govind na aayenge…

Kal tak keval andha raja, ab goonga-behra bhi hai

Honth sil diye hain janata ke, kanon par pehra bhi hai

Tum hi kaho ye anshru tumhare,

Kisko kya samajhayenge?

Suno Draupadi! Shastra uthalo ab Govind na aayenge

The English Translation of the Poem Suno Draupadi

Listen Draupadi! Take up arms, now Govind will not come…

Leave the henna, rattle the sword

You take on the barbaric horde

In the game plan of the Shakunis

… each head is sold for a sum

Listen Draupadi! Take up arms, now Govind will not come…

For how long will you depend on editors who sell news for a dime

How can you expect safety from governments that support crime

Your kith and kin rendered impotent

How will they get you freedom

Listen Draupadi! Take up arms, now Govind will not come…

The rule was only blind till now, it has become deaf and dumb

Our voices have been gagged; our emotions have been made numb

Will these tears ever fetch any sympathy

For your repeated martyrdom?

Listen Draupadi! Take up arms, now Govind will not come…

The Relevance of the References to the Epic Mahabharata in Suno Draupadi

Pushyamitra’s poem includes explicit and implicit allusions to the episode of the attempted disrobing of Draupadi in King Dhritrashtra’s court. I have not been able to include all of them in my translation because I did not want to dilute the tempo of the poem. However, these references need to be recognised to understand their relevance even today.

·       ab Govind na aayenge: In the Mahabharata, Draupadi invoked Govind to come to her rescue and he did. This facility is no longer available.

·       cheer: Cheer refers to the end of the sari that Duhshasan pulled to try and disrobe Draupadi.

·       dyut bichhaye baithe Shakuni: The game of dice was rigged by Shakuni to ensure Yudhishthir’s defeat. Today there are plans and procedures in place that vitiate investigations and allow the perpetrators to go free.

·       Duhshasan darbaron se: Duhshasan literally translates as bad governance and this pun is used to describe the administration of the day.

·       swayam jo lajjaheen pade hain: The Pandava brothers had already been staked and lost and were now slaves of Duryodhana without any honour left. The same way, the family of the victim is helpless, both in prevention of the atrocity or in procurement of justice.

·       kal tak keval andha raja: This is a reference to the bling king, Dhritrashtra
