Some Difficulties in Translating a Ghazal from Urdu to English 

The metre and the rhyme known as qafiya (AA BA CA …) do not pose any difficulty in translation. The problem comes from the refrain or radif, which is phrase that appears at the end of every second line of the couplet. In the first couplet the radif appears in both lines. The qafiya comes just before the radif.

 

In aankhon se vaabasta afsaane hazaaron hain: hazaaron hai is the radif and afsaane is the qafiya.

 

Because the grammatical sentence structure of English differs from that of Urdu and Hindi, it is easy to insert a radif in the middle of the line, but difficult to do so at the end. In my translations of ghazals, I do not use the radif at all, which I realise is a flaw. I wanted to be upfront about this.

Explanation of the Lyrics of Oo Bolega  

Explanation of Bin Pendi Lota

Pendi means flat bottomed, so bin pendi would mean without flat bottom, or round bottomed. Just as a round bottomed pot would be unstable and roll in all directions, men are wayward as far as attraction to women is concerned. This is the essence of the song.

Explanation of the Chorus 

According to verbal enunciation, particularly in India, “oo” stands for yes and “oo oo” stands for no. The dancer is asking whether men will say yes or say no. In the context of the content of the main verses, the question of men saying no does not arise and therefore the chorus must be interpreted in a special manner.

 

The kind of men described in this song prey on weak women. If they are confronted by a girl who is bold, then they will back off. The dancer is in effect asking the men whether they will mete out the same treatment to her as they do to weaker women. The question is rhetorical and the obvious answer is they will not.

Kabhie Kabhie was a box office blockbuster, whose success was almost entirely driven by a fabulous soundtrack. The three main contributors were the music composer Khayyam, the lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi, and the main playback singer Mukesh (who sang for Amitabh Bachchan). All three of them were declared best in their respective categories in the 24^th Filmfare Awards. Sahir Ludhianvi and Mukesh received their awards, not for this song, but for the title number Kabhie Kabhie Mere Dil Mein. This was the last major output from each of these legends.
