Din Dhal Jaae from Guide Translated to English Karaoke Style

Din Dhal Jaee – English Translation of Rafi Song from Guide

Meta Description:  Din Dhal Jaae is a Bollywood song from Dev Anand film Guide. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and Rafi the singer. Sing my English translation karaoke style.

Setting The Context for Di Dhal Jaae

The film Guide is an adaptation of the eponymous novel by R.K. Narayan. By the time the song plays, Rosie and Raju are already estranged. Raju drowns his sorrows in alcohol, while Rosie is absorbed in her dance performances.

The picturisation of the final verse of Din Dhal Jaae is among the most poignant I have ever seen. The fingers of the couple, once passionately in love but now separated, touch accidently. Neither seize the moment to turn the clock back and the opportunity to reconcile slips away. Both hold the other responsible for their fractured relationship and await the other to make the first move.

The theme of egos preventing reconciliation is a common thread in Bollywood songs. You might also be interested in my recent English translation of Hazaar Rahein, which explores a similar situation.

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Din Dhal Jaae

Days pass by but nights remain unspent

You don’t come your memories torment

Days pass by but nights remain unspent

You don’t come your memories torment

Days pass by

For your love I left everyone and suffered disgrace

You have left me and my heart and I share a lonely place

The love that once bloomed is now absent

Days pass by but nights remain unspent

You don’t come your memories torment

Days pass by

That slight drizzle, droplets falling as light as a feather

Without a care and lost to the world we both were together

Anything to relive again that moment

Days pass by but nights remain unspent

You don’t come your memories torment

Days pass by

You’re in my heart but tangibly you are very far

I trouble you, my heart troubles me, what a misfit we are

Who’s ego will be first to relent

Days pass by but nights remain unspent

You don’t come your memories torment

Days pass by

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Din Dhal Jaae from Guide

Din dhal jaae, haay raat na jaae

Tu to n ae, teri yaad sataae

Din dhal jaae, haay raat na jaae

Tu to n ae, teri yaad sataae

Din dhal jaae

Pyaar men jinake sab jag chhoda aur hue badanaam

Unake hi haatho haal hua ye, baithhe hain dil ko thaam

Apane kabhi the, ab hain paraae

Din dhal jaae, haay raat na jaae

Tu to n ae, teri yaad sataae

Din dhal jaae

Aisi hi rimajhim, aisi fuhaaren, aisi hi thi barasaat

Khud se juda aur jag se paraae, ham donon the saath

Fir se wo saawan ab kyon n ae?

Din dhal jaae, haay raat na jaae

Tu to n ae, teri yaad sataae

Din dhal jaae

Dil ke mere paas ho itani, fir bhi ho kitani dur

Tum mujhase, main dil se pareshaan, donon hain majabur

Aise men kis ko kaun manaae?

Din dhal jaae, haay raat na jaae

Tu to n ae, teri yaad sataae

Din dhal jaae
