O Haseena Zulfonwali Item Song Lyrics Translated in English

O Haseena Zulfonwali – English Translation of Best Item Song

Meta Description:  O Haseena Zulfonwali is an item number from the blockbuster Teesri Manzil. The hot pair Shammi Kapoor and Helen are on screen. Check the English translation.

The Context for the Item Song O Haseena Zulfonwali

O Haseena Zulfonwali stands out as one of the earliest grand item numbers, though back then such performances were known as cabarets. Featured in the film Teesri Manzil (1966), this number was part of an incredibly successful soundtrack that launched the young composer Rahul Dev Burman into the limelight. Like many blockbuster films, Teesri Manzil was surrounded by rumours and controversies, including the notable change in the male lead: Dev Anand was originally cast but was replaced by Shammi Kapoor after a falling out with the producer.

O Haseena Zulfonwali showcases a cabaret performance set in a nightclub, where the male dancer portrays a charming Casanova and the female dancer embodies a captivating femme fatale. The lively, flirtatious banter between the two characters has been translated effectively into English, retaining its original allure and excitement.

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of O Haseena Zulfonwali

Rafi:

Hi beautiful with long tresses of widespread fame

Unfaithful eyes are hunting down what sort of game

Hi beautiful with long tresses of widespread fame

Unfaithful eyes are hunting down what sort of game

Party hopping from club to club like a hot flame

Party hopping from club to club like a hot flame

Asha:

Unknown stranger if I can find

A casual fling who would not mind

Has scorched women and is hiding

I search for a moth of that kind

Asha:

It’s hot, and sharp, the fire from my eyes

Rafi:

I will dowse it with my cold pleasant sighs

Asha:

Somewhere, some time, we will meet at some place

Rafi:

I am romance, you’ll never find me in one place

Asha:

I too am the shadows of the street, sometimes here and sometimes there

When the sun is down then the magic of my charm will flare.

Rafi:

Hi beautiful with long tresses of widespread fame

Unfaithful eyes are hunting down what sort of game

Party hopping from club to club like a hot flame

Party hopping from club to club like a hot flame

Asha:

Unknown stranger if I can find

A casual fling who would not mind

Has scorched women and is hiding

I search for a moth of that kind

Asha:

You’re hiding, what’s happened, where is your flair

Rafi:

Forget me, you’re looking different today, I swear

Asha:

It is true, I have stepped up my oomph for the night

Rafi:

You have transformed yourself into a playboy’s delight

Asha:

Wait a while, my dear, tell me what is your name

Rafi:

I am truly faithful, though some call me infame

Asha:

Got me hooked, then you leave, that’s not loyalty

Rafi:

My beauty, I’ve been floored by your coquetry

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Dil Cheez Kya Hai

My heart is a trifle take my life away

My heart is a trifle take my life away

Just for once listen to

Just for once listen to what I have to say

Just for once listen to what I have to say

My heart is a trifle take my life away

You will be in this audience

You will be in this

You will be in this audience

You will be in this audience again and again

Again and again

Please make sure you remember

Please make sure you remember the walls and doorway

Please make sure you remember the walls and doorway

My heart is a trifle take my life away

Agreed that friends do not always

Agreed that friends do not

Agreed that friends do not always honour friendship

Take help from others and you’ll be

Take help from others and you’ll be under their sway

Take help from others and you’ll be under their sway

My heart is a trifle take my life away

I will pull

I will pull down the heavens

I will pull down the heavens to earth if you say so

Once you resolve there is

Once you resolve there is nothing you cannot attain

Once you resolve there is nothing you cannot attain

My heart is a trifle take my life away

Just for once, just for once

Just for once listen to what I have to say

I have to say, I have to say

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Dil Kya Cheez Hai from Umrao Jaan

Dil cheez kya hai aap meri jaan lijiye

Dil cheez kya hai aap meri jaan lijiye

Bas ek baar mera kaha

Bas ek baar mera kaha maan lijiye

Dil cheez kya hai aap meri jaan lijiye

Is anjuman mein aap ko

Is anjuman mein,

Is anjuman mein aap ko aana hai baar baar

Aana hai baar baar

Deevaar-o-dar ko gaur se

Deevaar-o-dar ko gaur se pehchaan lijiye

Deevaar-o-dar ko gaur se pehchaan lijiye

Dil cheez kya hai aap meri jaan lijiye

Mushkil nahin hai kuch bhi

Mushkil nahin hai kuch bhi agar thaan lijiye

Mushkil nahin hai kuch bhi agar thaan lijiye

In Ankhon Ki Masti from Umrao Jaan Translated in English

In Ankhon Ki Masti – English Translation of Mujra Ghazal

Meta Description:  In Ankhon Ki Masti is a ghazal delivered as a mujra from Umrao Jaan. The film has Rekha playing the eponymous courtesan.  Check out my English translation.

Some Difficulties in Translating a Ghazal from Urdu to English

The metre and the rhyme known as qafiya (AA BA CA …) do not pose any difficulty in translation. The problem comes from the refrain or radif, which is phrase that appears at the end of every second line of the couplet. In the first couplet the radif appears in both lines. The qafiya comes just before the radif.

In aankhon se vaabasta afsaane hazaaron hain: hazaaron hai is the radif and afsaane is the qafiya.

Because the grammatical sentence structure of English differs from that of Urdu and Hindi, it is easy to insert a radif in the middle of the line, but difficult to do so at the end. In my translations of ghazals, I do not use the radif at all, which I realise is a flaw. I wanted to be upfront about this.

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of In Ankhon Ki Masti

Thousands are captivated,

Thousands are captivated by the allure of my eyes

By the allure of my eyes

These eyes have given rise to

These eyes have given rise to many thousands of li..es

Many thousands of li..es

By the allure of my eyes

You are not the only one

You are not the only one who is disgraced in my love

Disgraced in my love

There are thousands like yourself

There are thousands like yourself who your families despise

Who your families despise

Thousands are captivated by the allure of my eyes

By the allure of my eyes

There are thousands of taverns,

There are thousands of taverns scattered all over the town

Scattered all over the town

One sip of wine from my eyes

One sip of wine from my eyes and you’ll be in paradise

And you’ll be in paradise

Thousands are captivated by the allure of my eyes

By the allure of my eyes

You are frightening this flame

You are frightening this flame with threats of a hurricane

With threats of a hurricane

Thousands of moths protect this

Thousands of moths protect this bright flame from any capsize

Bright flame from any capsize

Thousands are captivated by the allure of my eyes

These eyes have given rise to many thousands of li..es

Many thousands of li..es

By the allure of my eyes

In aankhon ki masti ke, aah aah aah

Ek sirf humi mai ko,

Ek sirf humi mai ko aankhon se pilaate hain

Aankhon se pilaate hain

Kehne ko to duniya mein

Kehne ko to duniya mein maikhaane hazaaron hain

Maikhaane hazaaron hain

Parvaane hazaaron hain

In aankhon ki masti ke mastaane hazaaron hain

In aankhon se vaabasta afsaane hazaaron hain

In aankhon ki masti ke

Meanings of difficult Urdu words

Afsaane = stories

Tanha = alone

Ulfat = love

Rusva = disgraced

Maikhaane = taverns

Shamm-e-faroza = bright flame

Parvaane = moths

The Literal English Translation of the Lyrics of In Ankhon Ki Masti

I had to take some liberties with the exact words to maintain the structure and essence of the ghazal, so I am providing a literal English translation as well.

In aankhon ki masti ke mastaane hazaaron hain

There are thousands of admirers of the mystique of my eyes

In aankhon se vaabasta afsaane hazaaron hain

There are thousands of stories connected to my eyes

Ek tum hi nahin tanha ulfat mein meri rusva

You alone have not been disgraced by falling in love with me

Is shaher mein tum jaise deewaane hazaaron hain

There are thousands of die-hard lovers like you in this city

Ek sirf humi mai ko aankhon se pilaate hain

I am the only one who can offer wine (intoxicate) through my eyes

Kehne ko to duniya mein maikhaane hazaaron hain

They say there are thousands of taverns in this world

Is shamm-e-faroza ko aandhi se darraate ho

Are you trying to scare this bright flame by talking of storms

Is shamm-e-faroza ke parvaane hazaaron hain

There are thousands of moths to protect this bright flame

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Kajrare from Bunty Aur Babli

Aisi nazar se dekha us zaalim ne chowk par

Humne kaleja rakh diya, chaaku ki nok par

Mera chain-vain sab ujada, zaalim nazar hata le (x2)

Barbaad ho rahe hain ji

Barbaad ho rahe hain ji, tere apne shahar waale

Mera chain-vain sab ujada, zaalim nazar hata le

Barbaad ho rahe hain ji, tere apne shahar waale

Ho, meri angdaayi na toote tu aaja,

Meri angdaayi na toote tu aaja

Kajrare....

Kajrare-kajrare, tere kaare-kaare naina – (x4)

Ho mere naina, mere naina, mere naina judwa naina
Kajrare-kajrare, tere kaare-kaare naina

Surame se likhe tere waade, aankhon ki zabaani aate hain

Mere roomaalon pe lab tere, baandh ke nishaani jaate hain

Teri baaton mein kimaam ki khushbu hai,

Tera aana bhi garmiyon ki loo hai

Teri baaton mein kimaam ki khushbu hai,

Tera aana bhi garmiyon ki loo hai

Aa-ja, toote na, toote na andgaayi

Meri angdaayi na toote tu aaja,

Meri angdaayi na toote tu aaja

Kajrare ...

Kajrare-kajrare, tere kaare-kaare naina – (x4)

Ho mere naina, mere naina, mere nainon mein chhup ke rehana
Kajrare-kajrare, tere kaare-kaare naina

Aankhein bhi kamaal karti hain, parshanal se sawaal karti hain

Palkon ko uthaati bhi nahin (hmmm), parde ka khyaal karti hain

Mera gham to kisi se bhi chhupta nahin

Dard hota hai dard jab chubhta nahin

Mera gham to kisi se bhi chhupta nahin

Dard hota hai dard jab chubhta nahin

Aa-ja, toote na, toote na andgaayi

Meri angdaayi na toote tu aaja,

Meri angdaayi na toote tu aaja

Kajrare ...

Kajrare-kajrare, tere kaare-kaare naina – (x4)

Ho tere naina, tere naina, hamein daste hain tere naina
Kajrare-kajrare, tere kaare-kaare naina

Ho, tujhse milna puraani Dilli mein

Chhod aaye nishaani Diili mein

Ballimaran se Daribe talak,

Teri-meri kahaani Dilli mein
O ho. Kaali kamli waale ko yaad karke,

Tere kaare-kaare naino ki kasam khaate hain

Teri kaali-kaali naino ki balaayein le loon

Tere kaare-kaare naino ko duaayein de doon

Meri jaan udaas hai, hothon pe pyaas hai

Aa ja re, aa ja re, aa ja re

Teri baaton mein kimaam ki khushbu hai,

Tera aana bhi garmiyon ki loo hai

Teri baaton mein kimaam ki khushbu hai,

Tera aana bhi garmiyon ki loo hai

Meri angdaayi na toote tu aaja,

Meri angdaayi na toote tu aaja

Ho tere naina, tere naina, tere naina judwa naina (x2)
Ho tere naina, tere naina, tere nain mein chhup ke rehana (x2)

Kajrare-kajrare, tere kaare-kaare naina (x2)

The Literal English Translation of the Lyrics of Kajrare

I have had to resort to a fair degree of transcreation to get the English translation spot on. There is a need to provide the literal English translation as well, so that readers can understand exactly what Gulzar has conveyed in this award-winning song.

The rogue gave me such a glance at the street square

I gave him my heart as if at the point of a knife

I have lost my peace of mind, now at least avert your glance

I, your own compatriot, am getting devastated

Come before I finish stretching my arms

Kohl lined

Kohl lined, your black eyes

My eyes, my eyes, my pair of eyes

Your promises written in kohl, are being told through the language of your eyes

Your lips leave their mark on my handkerchiefs

Your conversations have the fragrance of betel nut paste

You bring the heat from the dry summer wind

Come before I finish stretching my arms

Kohl lined

Kohl lined, your black eyes

My eyes, my eyes, you can hide in my eyes

Eyes can work wonders by asking personal questions

They do not lift their eyelids as if following the custom of keeping a lowered gaze

My sadness is not hidden from anyone

There is pain even when you cannot feel it

Come before I finish stretching my arms

Kohl lined

Kohl lined, your black eyes

Your eyes, your eyes, your eyes sting us

I met you in Old Delhi

Left the sign of our meeting there

From Ballimaran to Daribe

Everyone is talking about us

Invoking Krishna (the dark skinned cowherd who has a small blanket around his waist)

I swear on your black eyes

I will pray for the safety of your black eyes

I will bless your black eyes

My love is sad, her lips thirst for love

Please come
