Sarfaroshi Ki Tammana Poetic Translation of Patriotic Song

Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna – Translation of Bismil Azimabadi Poem

Meta Description:  Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna is a patriotic poem by Bismil Azimabadi popularised by Ram Prasad Bismil in the freedom struggle. Enjoy the translation of this ghazal.

Setting the Background for Translating Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna

Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna was penned in 1921 by Bismil Azimabadi in response to the horrific Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The ghazal became a clarion call to arms for those engaged in the freedom struggle against British colonial rule. It was most famously embraced by Ram Prasad Bismil, a revolutionary icon, who is said to have recited the poem on route to the gallows—an act that cemented the poem’s place in the annals of India's fight for independence.

The full ghazal consists of eleven couplets and has since been featured in various abridged or adapted forms in Bollywood patriotic films. Its first cinematic appearance was in Manoj Kumar’s Shaheed (1965), that rekindled the patriotic fervour in a generation born after India’s independence. I have based my translation of Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna on this adaptation. I am also reproducing the transliteration of the full ghazal.

Translating Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna as a Ghazal

The qafiya (rhyme) and radif (refrain) are essential structural elements in the composition of a ghazal. However, one of the greatest challenges in translating Urdu ghazals into English lies in adapting the radif—primarily due to the stark grammatical differences between Urdu and English sentence structures.

In most of my translations of Bollywood ghazals, I have managed to incorporate both the qafiya and radif to preserve the integrity of the original poetic form. Unfortunately, in the case of Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna, the use of a consistent radif has proven elusive. As a result, the relevant lines conclude with the qafiya alone, without the accompanying refrain. If you have a suggestion for a suitable radif that works naturally within the rhythm and spirit of this translation, please feel free to share it in the comments. I would be happy to consider revising the translation accordingly and will be sure to acknowledge your contribution.

Translating Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna has required a fair degree of transcreation to retain the poem’s patriotic fervour and emotional intensity. To offer readers a fuller understanding of the original, I have also included a literal translation.

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna

Why are people so afraid

To speak what’s on their mind

Everywhere I look around

I see them cowering like mice

I see them cowering like mice

We are committed to perform

The ultimate sacrifice

We are committed to perform

The ultimate sacrifice

Let us test how much power

In the tyrant’s arms lies

We are committed to perform

The ultimate sacrifice

When the hour of truth arrives

We’ll speak up what must be said

When the hour of truth arrives

We’ll speak up what must be said

Why to reveal our hand before

The final roll of the dice

The final roll of the dice

We are committed to perform

The ultimate sacrifice

Let us test how much power

In the tyrant’s arms lies

We are committed to perform

The ultimate sacrifice

We will take the battle to

The enemy’s streets and gates

We will take the battle to

The enemy’s streets and gates

In this war for liberty

Gladly we will pay the price

Gladly we will pay the price

We are committed to perform

The ultimate sacrifice

Let us test how much power

In the tyrant’s arms lies

We are committed to perform

The ultimate sacrifice

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna from Shaheed (1965)

Ab hamare dil mein hai

Sarfaroshi ki tamanna

Ab hamare dil mein hai

Dekhna hai zor kitn

Bazu-e-qaatil mein hai

Sarfaroshi ki tamanna

Ab hamare dil mein hai

Waqt aane par bataa

Denge tujhe o aasman

Waqt aane par bataa

Denge tujhe o aasman

Hum abhi se kya bataye

Kya humare dil mein hai

Kya humare dil mein hai

Sarfaroshi ki tamanna

Dekhna hai zor kitna

Bazu-e-qaatil mein hai

Sarfaroshi ki tamanna

Ab hamare dil mein hai

Khaich kar layi hai sabko

Qatl hone ki ummeed

Khaich kar layi hai sabko

Qatl hone ki ummeed

Aashiqon ka aaj jamaghat

Kuchaa-e-qaatil mein hai

Kuchaa-e-qaatil mein hai

Sarfaroshi ki tamanna

Ab hamare dil mein hai

Dekhna hai zor kitna

Bazu-e-qaatil mein hai

Sarfaroshi ki tamanna

Ab hamare dil mein hai

Meanings of Difficult Urdu Words

Sarfaroshi = Willingness to sacrifice one’s life

Kuchaa-e-qaatil = The lanes of the murderer

The Original Urdu Complete Lyrics of Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna by Bismil Azimabadi

Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai
Dekhna hai zor kitna baazu-e-qaatil mein hai

Karta nahin kyun doosra kuch baat-cheet
Dekhta hun main jise woh chup teri mehfil mein hai
Aye shaheed-e-mulk-o-millat main tere oopar nisaar
Ab teri himmat ka charcha ghair ki mehfil mein hai
Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai

Waqt aanay dey bata denge tujhe aye aasman
Hum abhi se kya batayen kya hamare dil mein hai
Khainch kar layee hai sab ko qatl hone ki ummeed
Aashiqon ka aaj jumghat koocha-e-qaatil mein hai
Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai

Hai liye hathiyaar dushman taak mein baitha udhar
Aur hum taiyyaar hain seena liye apna idhar

Hum to ghar se nikle hi the baandhkar sar pe kafan
Jaan hatheli par liye lo barh chale hain ye qadam
Zindagi to apni mehmaan maut ki mehfil mein hai
Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai

Yuun khadaa maqtal mein qaatil kah rahaa hai baar baar
Kya tamannaa-e-shahaadat bhi kisee ke dil mein hai
Dil mein tuufaanon ki toli aur nason mein inqilaab
Hosh dushman ke udaa denge humein roko na aaj
Duur reh paaye jo humse dam kahaan manzil mein hai
Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai

Wo jism bhi kya jism hai jismein na ho khoon-e-junoon
Kya lade toofaanon se jo kashti-e-saahil mein hai
Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai.
Dekhna hai zor kitna baazu-e-qaatil mein hai.

The Literal English Translation of the Lyrics of Ruaan

Why ia a person not

Talking to anyone else

Whoever I see

Is silent in your party

The desire to sacrifice our lives

Is now within our hearts

We have to see how strong are

The arms of the oppressor

When the time comes we

Will reveal all to the skies

Now why should we say

What is in our hearts

We all have been dragged here

By the desire to die for our cause

The lovers of freedom are assembled

In the lanes of the oppressor

Kal Ho Na Ho Poetic Translation of Sonu Nigam Title Track

Kal Ho Na Ho – Filmfare Award Winning Title Song Translated

Meta Description:  Kal Ho Na Ho is the title song of the Dharma Productions film. The Bollywood song has won three Filmfare Awards. Enjoy the translation to the original music.

Setting the Background for Translating Kal Ho Na Ho

Kal Ho Naa Ho, which translates as "Tomorrow May Never Come," is the title track of the blockbuster Bollywood film with the same name. The story revolves around a love triangle set in New York City, featuring Aman (played by Shah Rukh Khan), Rohit (played by Saif Ali Khan), and Naina (played by Preity Zinta). Aman is deeply in love with Naina, but due to a terminal heart condition, he knows he can never be with her. Meanwhile, Rohit has feelings for Naina and turns to Aman for help in winning her heart. In the first verse of the song, Aman encourages Naina to accept Rohit, reminding her that the future is uncertain. In the second verse, Aman struggles with his own feelings, coming to terms with the reality that he may not live long enough to be with Naina and thus should step aside for her happiness.

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Kal Ho Na Ho

Each second life is ever changing ever new

Now it is shade and then it is sunshine for you

Live each second right till the end

This moment won’t come back again

Each second life is ever changing ever new

Now it is shade and then it is sunshine for you

Live each second right till the end

This moment won’t come back again

Who’ll love you with heart and soul

That person should be your goal

Such a love you should pursue

That is the right partner for you

Hold on to that hand my friend

The favour won’t come back again

Live each second right till the end

This moment won’t come back again

After coming face to face

Takes you in sheltered embrace

Pulsating heart you try to contend

It yet continues to race

But this you must comprehend

The love story won’t come back again

Each second life is ever changing ever new

Now it is shade and then it is sunshine for you

Live each second right till the end

This moment won’t come back again

Live each second right till the end

This moment won’t come back again

This moment won’t come back again

Justaju Jis Ki Thi Translation of Ghazal from Umrao Jaan

Justaju Jis Ki Thi – Poetic Translation of Bollywood Ghazal

Meta Description:  Justaji Jis Ki Thi is a classic ghazal from the Bollywood film Umrao Jaan (1981) with Rekha in the title role. Enjoy the translation set to the original music.

Setting the Background for Translating Justaju Jis Ki Thi

Umrao Jaan was one of the most celebrated courtesans of her era. Among her many patrons, Nawab Sultan was the most devoted, and over time, their bond deepened into love. Yet, succumbing to societal pressures, the Nawab was ultimately forced to marry someone of his own social standing. In a poignant moment, Umrao Jaan performs Justaju Jis Ki Thi before the Nawab and his new bride. This exquisitely composed ghazal is a powerful expression of her sorrow, directed at the Nawab, but to his wife, it is just another ghazal. This situation has created some of Bollywood’s most iconic songs, including the timeless Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh.

Umrao Jaan is often remembered by her full name, Umrao Jaan Adaa. The term “Adaa” in the final verse of the song is a direct reference to herself, a personal pseudonym, and should not be mistaken for the common noun meaning "grace."

Bottom of Form

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Justaju Jis Ki Thi

The love that I sought, that love

I could not make my own

The love that I sought, that love

I could not make my own

But because of this love the

Entire world I have known

The love that I sought

I have not stained your honour

I have not stained your honour

Nor have brought shame to myself

To the sanctity

To the sanctity of love

Respect I have shown

To the sanctity of love

Respect I have shown

The love that I sought

When did we meet where did we part ways

When did we meet where did we part ways

I do not recall

Life I have seen you

Life I have seen you only

In my dreams I bemoan

Life I have seen you only

In my dreams I bemoan

The love that I sought

Oh Adaa what

Oh Adaa what else can I

Portray about my state

The long journey of life I

The long journey of life I

Have traversed all alone

The long journey of life I

Have traversed all alone

The love that I sought, that love

I could not make my own

But because of this love the

Entire world I have known

The love that I sought

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Justaju Jis Ki Thi from Umrao Jaan (1981)

Justaju jis ki thi us ko
To naa paya hum ne
Justaju jis ki thi us ko
To naa paya hum ne
Is bahaane se magar dekh
Li duniyaan hum ne
Justaju jis ki thi

Tujh ko rusawaa naa kiya
Tujh ko rusawaa naa kiya
Khud bhi pashemaan na huye
Ishq ki rasm ko
Ishq ki rasm ko is tarah
Nibhaya hum ne
Ishk ki rasm ko is tarah
Nibhaya hum ne
Justaju jis ki thi

Kab mili thi kaha bichhadi thi
Kab mili thi kaha bichhadi thi
Hame yaad nahi

Zindagi tujh ko to
Zindagi tujh ko to bas
Khwaab mein dekhaa hum ne
Zindagi tujh ko to bas
Khwaab mein dekhaa hum ne
Justaju jis ki thi

Aye adaa aaur
Aye adaa aaur sunaye
Bhi to kya haal apna
Umar kaa lambaa safar
Umar kaa lambaa safar
Tay kiya tanahaa hum ne
Umar kaa lanbaa safar
Tay kiya tanahaa hum ne

Justaju jis ki thi us ko
To naa paya hum ne
Is bahaane se magar
Dekh li duniyaan hum ne
Justaju jis ki thi.

Meanings of Difficult Urdu Words

Justaju = Search

Rusawaa = Defame

Pashemaan = Ashamed

The Literal English Translation of the Lyrics of Justaju Jis Ki Thi

The person that I was searching for

I could not get

But because of this I saw

The entire world (probably through intelligent conversations with her lover about various issues)

I did not besmirch your reputation

Nor felt any guilt

This way the rituals of love

I have maintained

When did I meet and where did we part ways

I do not remember

Life I have only

Seen you in my dreams

Oh Adaa what else can I say

About my state

The long journey of live

I have traversed alone

Rafu Translated from Award Winning Romcom Film Tumhari Sulu

Rafu – Poetic English Translation of Vidya Balan Hit Song

Meta Description:  Rafu is a background song from the romantic comedy Tumhari Sulu. Vidya Balan won the Best Actress Filmfare Award for this role. Enjoy the poetic translation.

Setting the Background for Translating Rafu

The word Rafu translates directly to "darn" (as in mending fabric). Tumhari Sulu tells the story of a couple who have carefully stitched together a modest life by economizing at every turn. When Sulu gets the chance to host an agony-aunt-style radio show, she embraces the opportunity with the unwavering support of her husband, Ashok. Together, they navigate this new chapter while cherishing small moments of joy with their son, Pranav. The song Rafu plays in the background as the family finds warmth and happiness in their otherwise ordinary routine.

Because the song's poetic translation requires a fair amount of transcreation to preserve its metre and rhyme, a literal translation is also provided for reference.

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Rafu

With many different threads we’ve woven this world of our own

Yes, with many different threads we’ve woven this world of our own

Some sun rays some raindrop necklaces both we have sewn

A few you have stitched some have been darned by me

Fabrics home grown

A few you have stitched some have been darned by me

Fabrics home grown

With many different threads we’ve woven this world of our own

Some sun rays some raindrop necklaces both we have sewn

A few you have stitched some have been darned by me

Fabrics home grown

A few you have stitched some have been darned by me

Fabrics home grown

Yes, you had taken the roads the walls were in my share

You had taken the roads the walls were in my share

On the walls I painted spring flowers everywhere

You returned late evening all day I was alone

But you returned late evening all day I was alone

A few you have stitched some have been darned by me

Fabrics home grown

A few you have stitched some have been darned by me

Fabrics home grown

Re fa so ti la so fa so mi

Fa la so mi fa so mi fa re doh ti re

Mi fa so mi fa re doh ti re doh

In this manner we stitched together a story miles long

In this manner we stitched together a story miles long

Some by your rugged hands some with my plaintive song

Now what little is left of life is for us to own

Now what little is left of life is for us to own

A few you have stitched some have been darned by me

Fabrics home grown

A few you have stitched some have been darned by me

Fabrics home grown

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Rafu from Tumhari Sulu

Kaise kaise dhaagon se buni hai ye duniya

Haan kaise kaise dhaagon se buni hai ye duniya

Kabhi dhoop kabhi baadalon ki ye ladiyaan

Kuchh tune si hai maine ki hai rafu

Ye doriyaan

Kuchh tune si hai maine ki hai rafu

Ye doriyaan

Kaise kaise dhaagon se buni hai ye duniya

Kabhi dhoop kabhi baadalon ki ye ladiyaan

Kuchh tune si hai maine ki hai rafu

Ye doriyaan

Kuchh tune si hai maine ki hai rafu

Ye doriyaan

Haan teri bani raahen meri thi deewaaren

Teri bani raahen meri thi deewaaren

Un deewaaron pe hi maine likh li bahaaren

Shaam hui tu jo aaya so gayi thi kaliyaan

Phir shaam hui tu jo aaya so gayi thi kaliyaan

Kuchh tune si hai maine ki hai rafu

Ye doriyaan

Kuchh tune si hai maine ki hai rafu

Ye doriyaan

Re ma pa ni dha pa ma pa ga

Ma dha pa ga ma pa ga ma re sa ni re

Ga ma pa ga ma re sa ni re sa

Yun seete seete meelon ki ban gayi kahani

Yun seete seete meelon ki ban gayi kahani

Kuchh tere haathon se kuchh meri zubaani

Ab jo bhi hai ye aadha pauna hai to rangraliyaan

Ab jo bhi hai ye aadha pauna hai to rangraliyaan

Kuchh tune si hai maine ki hai rafu

Ye doriyaan

Kuchh tune si hai maine ki hai rafu

Ye doriyaan

The Literal English Translation of the Lyrics of Rafu

With such different threads we have weaved our world

Some were like beads of sunshine some were like beads of clouds

You have stitched I have darned some

These strings

You got the roads I received the walls

On those walls I created images of springtime

When you returned home late evening the buds were asleep

In this manner we stitched together a story miles long

Some with your hands and some with my words

Now the quarter that is left is for us to enjoy
