Na To Caravan Ki Qawwali Explained and Translated in English

Na To Caravan Ki – Qawwali from Barsaat Ki Raat Explained

Meta Description:  No To Caravan Ki Talash Hai is the most popular Bollywood Qawwali. It is one of the longest Hindi film songs. Understand the complex meaning of this qawwali.

Explanation of the Meaning of the Qawwali Na To Caravan Ki Talash Hai

Na To Caravan Ki Talash Hai from Barsaat Ki Raat has the quintessential structure of a qawwali—both in its lyrical content and its picturisation on screen. Yet, unlike most qawwalis that revolve around playful banter or competitive one-upmanship, this song takes a more profound and reflective approach to the theme of love. It moves beyond the surface, delving into the complexities of love in a deeply philosophical yet poetic manner. The song’s structure mirrors the shifting nature of love itself, exploring its many facets as it progresses.

Love, the yearning for the beloved, is presented as the ultimate human pursuit. The song suggests that a life without love is worse than death—because love is not just an emotion, but a powerful force that embodies honour, faith, and the soul itself. Yet, the song also acknowledges the torment and destruction that can arise from unrequited love, demonstrating its dual nature: both life-giving and life-shattering.

Shakespeare’s observation that "the course of true love never did run smooth" finds a resonant echo in the next section of the qawwali. Here, love's adversaries are revealed—be they societal structures, authoritarian figures, or the self-appointed guardians of morality. These forces create obstacles in love's path, using threats, violence, imprisonment, or even execution to deter it. Despite this, the song conveys the resilience of the true lover, one who refuses to abandon their beloved, regardless of the pressures or dangers they face.

As the song progresses, it critiques the tension between love and organised religion. Love, in its purest form, cannot be confined by religious doctrines or institutional structures. Religion, with its rigid rules and systems, often stands in opposition to the spontaneity and freedom of love. Yet, paradoxically, the qawwali also acknowledges that love’s own customs can be even more inflexible than those of religion, highlighting love’s power to create its own set of unyielding principles.

The song then takes an unexpected turn, suggesting that the highest teachings of all religions are, in fact, rooted in love. In Hinduism, the love of Radha for Krishna, Sita’s devotion to Rama, and Mira’s unshakeable faith in Krishna are celebrated as exemplars of divine love. Similarly, the teachings of Islam, the compassion of Buddha, the love of Jesus, and the commandments of Judaism all emphasize love as the core of spiritual life. This section of the qawwali beautifully unites the spiritual and the worldly, offering love as the highest, most universal truth.

Through its powerful lyrics and emotive performance, Na To Caravan Ki Talash Hai transcends the conventional boundaries of qawwali, making it not just a musical composition, but a meditation on the transcendent and transformative power of love.

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Na To Caravan Ki Talash

MALE:
I’m not in search of a multitude

And not in search of a companion

My devastated desires are in search of

A path that leads to my loved one.

FEMALE:
My unfulfilled obsession has only one cure and that is death

Who will prescribe a fatal poison I’m in search of such a physician

MALE:

Love for you is my ambition
Love for you is my devotion

Heart is, body is, and breath is love

If you ask of my faith, then my faith is love

How can I give up loving you?

Your love has been my life’s mission

This love love is, love love, this love love is, love love

Only those in pain can feel the pain of others

I am speaking to the flame, and not to the listeners

Because this love love is, love love, this love love is, love love

FEMALE:
By dawn, everything will burn and be reduced to dust

In the crowd some become the flames and some the moths – they must

Because this love love is, love love, this love love is, love love

MALE:

Barbarism, and beheadings, and gallows could not end it

Any swords, any bows and arrows could not end it

Love is Majnu’s eternal call for his Laila

And emperors, sultans, and pharaohs could not end it

Because

FEMALE:

This love love is, love love, this love love is, love love

MALE:

I’ll give up my life if she asks even in jest

This life is nothing, I’ll give my soul on request

Because this love love is, love love, this love love is, love love

They say live life with attitude and also grace

And they say life is a poison that you must face

When I survive the poison, they ask why don’t I die

When I am dying, they say that life you must embrace

FEMALE:

This love love is, love love, this love love is, love love

MALE:

Love is a faith with rigid customs of its own

Lovers face deep pits of fire and walls of stone

Love is free from the clutches of all religions

It is a faith by itself and has its own visions

It does not obey the diktats of any priests

In truth these are its thundering proclamations

FEMALE:
Love doesn’t ask your caste or wealth, neither asks your religion

Love’s a very private bond that avoids celebration

Because love

This love love is, love love, this love love is, love love

MALE:
Love’s path is difficult, do not think it to be easy

This love love is, love love is, this love love is, love love

Road to the river is with hazard fraught

FEMALE:

Road to the river is with hazard fraught

From Jamuna then how can I fill the water pot

I went to Jamuna my pot to fill
Listen dear friend, I went to Jamuna my pot to fill

Nand Kishor stopped me against my will

From Jamuna then how can I fill the water pot

MALE:
From Jamuna then how can I fill the water pot

Now for my honour please spare a thought

Whenever Krishna played his flute

Radha appeared adorned

Oblivious and uncaring of
Customs and of norms

Janak’s daughter wandered in the forests

Following love’s direction

Longing for a glimpse of her lord

Meera drank the poison and then she pleaded thus

Protect my honour, protect my honour, protect my honour

This love love is, love love, this love love is, love love

God’s and The Prophet’s command is love

And the Hadith is love, Quraan is love

For the Buddha and for Jesus their goal is love

The world is the body and its soul is love

Love’s eternal and love is victorious

Love’s Sinai and love is also Moses

Clay to idols, and idols to a shrine love can turn

Ultimately a human into a divine love can turn

Yes, this love love is, love love, this love love is, love love

Karaoke Translation of Tadbeer Se Bigdi Hui with Meanings

Tadbeer Se Bigdi Hui – Translation of Baazi Golden Oldie

Meta Description:  Tadbeer Se Bigdi Hui is a Bollywood Golden Oldie from the 1951 film Baazi. It was from the Guru Dutt Dev Anand combine. Enjoy the sensuous voice of Geeta Roy.

Dev Anand, Guru Dutt, and Geeta Roy

Away from the screen, Baazi is a story of two remarkable relationships.
Guru Dutt and Dev Anand, two of Bollywood’s most iconic stars, began their careers around the same time and quickly formed a close friendship. They made an unspoken pact: if Dev Anand produced a film first, Guru Dutt would direct it, and if Guru Dutt became a producer, Dev Anand would star in the lead role. It was Dev Anand who struck first with Baazi (1951), and he asked Guru Dutt to direct the film. This collaboration would go on to shape some of the most memorable songs in Hindi cinema, with both stars leaving a lasting impact on the music of the 1950s. Bollywood Translations will feature many of their iconic tracks in the coming months.

Another story intertwined with Baazi is that of Geeta Roy (later Geeta Dutt), the playback singer who lent her captivating voice to the film’s female vocals. Guru Dutt was so moved by her voice that he fell in love with her, and the two were married a few years later. Tragically, their relationship did not last, and they parted ways just a few years before Guru Dutt’s untimely death.

Explaining the Meaning of Tadbeer Se Bigdi Hui

Madan, financially distressed and down on his luck, has just turned down an offer to lure wealthy clients and is about to leave the gambling den. At this moment, the dancer Leena bursts into song, daring Madan to take up the challenge and change his fortune, if he has the courage. Beyond the narrative of the film, the song inspires listeners to overcome adversity through courage, determination, and hard work.

Originally written by Sahir Ludhianvi as a ghazal, the song retains the lyrical richness of the form. However, composer Sachin Dev Burman reimagined it with an upbeat, foot-tapping rhythm, perfectly suited to the situation in the film. This musical transformation almost completely subsumed the ghazal structure, giving the song a unique fusion of poetry and lively energy.

Tumse Kahoon Ek Baat from Dastak Translated and Explained

Tumse Kahoon Ek Baat – English Translation of Romantic Song

Meta Description:  Tumse Kahoon Ek Baat is a Bollywood song from Dastak (1970). Majrooh Sultanpuri and Madan Mohan create a classic music album. Enjoy my English translation.

Setting the Background of Tumse Kahoon Ek Baat

Hameed and Salma, anticipating a rare moment of companionship outdoors, are soon interrupted by an unexpected downpour. They rush back to their room, where the evening unfolds quietly, a tender, unhurried intimacy taking shape. The mood is one of quiet connection, soft rather than passionate. As the song plays, its lyrics weave seamlessly between the romance within the room and the rain-soaked scene outside. The visuals on the screen echo the words with a subtle precision, reinforcing the sense of emotional continuity between the two worlds.

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Tumse Kahoon Ek Baat

Let me tell you that I love you

Always always hmmm hmmm

Your scarf like the shade of the night

Covers my face hmmm hmmm

Let me tell you that I love you

Always always always always always

The lanes outside are asleep their arms outspread

The lanes outside are asleep their arms outspread

Hmmm hmmm

Far from the world I hide in your tresses my head

Hmmm hmmm

My dreams on the arches of your eyebrows I trace

Let me tell you that I love you

Always always always always always

From our bed the night appears faint and bleak

From our bed the night appears faint and bleak

Hmmm hmmm

Your moon-like face with the light plays hide and seek

Hmmm hmmm

Lost in love we feel as if suspended in space

Let me tell you that I love you

Always always always always always

Your rain wet body in my arms it does arouse

Your rain wet body in my arms it does arouse

Hmmm hmmm

Outside the drenched birds seek shelter amid the boughs

Hmmm hmmm

Drops trickling down your shoulder form a necklace

Let me tell you that I love you

Always always hmmm hmmm

Your scarf like the shade of the night

Covers my face hmmm hmmm

Always always always always always always

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Tumse Kahoon Ek Baat from Dastak (1970)

The Literal English Translation of the Lyrics of Tumse Kahoon ek Baat

tumse kahu ik baat paro si halki-halki

Let me tell you something as light as wings1

raat meri hai chhanv tumhare hi aanchal ki

The shade of your aanchal is my night

soi galiya baanh pasare aankhe meeche

The sleepy lanes have spread their arms closed their eyes

main duniya se door ghani palako ke neeche

Away from the world I lie beneath your thick eyelashes2

dekhu chalate khwaab lakiro par kaajal ki

I see dreams wandering along the lines of your kohl

dhundhali-dhundhali rain milan ka bistar jaise

The faint night is like our conjugal bed

khulata chhupata chaand sej ke upar jaise

It seems that the appearing-hiding moon is on the bed3

chalati phirati khaat hawaao par baadal ki

The clouds in the air form our bed in motion

hai bhiga saa jism tumhara in haatho mein

You wet body is in my hands4

baahar neend bhara panchhi bhigi shakho mein

Outside the sleepy bird perches on the wet branch

aur barakha ki bund badan se dhalki-dhalki

And the raindrop trickles down your body

1.     As an expression of tenderness

2.     In poetic imagery “beneath the eyelashes” is where the lover seeks refuge

3.     An allusion to the moon-like face of the lady

4.     The couple were drenched in a shower and are still wet

Aaj Sajan Mohe Lyrics from Pyaasa Translated and Explained

Aaj Sajan Mohe ang Lagaa Lo – Translation and Explanation

Meta Description:  Aaj Sajan Mohe Ang Laga Lo is a Bollywood classic song from Guru Dutt’s Pyaasa.  Understand the meaning and enjoy the transcreation set to the original music.

Setting the Background for Aaj Sajan Mohe Ang Laga Lo

On screen, the song projects a group of ascetics, with the woman at the centre singing passionately. Radha implores Krishna to take her into his embrace and relieve her of the spiritual agony she suffers from their separation. As Gulabo listens to this plaintive expression of longing, she experiences a similar torment, but on an earthly plane. Gulabo is in love with Vijay, yet unable to voice her feelings, paralyzed by the fear of rejection due to her status as a prostitute. The lyrics resonate on both the divine and earthly levels, creating a parallel between the female ascetic and Gulabo.

In another cult classic, Khamoshi, a song with a strikingly similar theme is featured. Hum Ne Dekhi Hai plays on the radio of a taxi, where the lovelorn protagonist, a woman traveling alone, is caught in the melancholy of unrequited love. The lyrics, once again, mirror her heartache, much like in Aaj Sajan Mohe Ang Laga Lo from Pyaasa. Both roles were performed by the legendary Waheeda Rehman, whose portrayal of longing and silent suffering remains iconic in both films.

The English Translation of the Lyrics of Aaj Sajan Mohe Ang Laga Lo

Dear friend, enduring pangs of separation when Radha was in a swoon

Then one day she went to her heart throb and asked for this boon

My love now take me in your embrace my life’s desires be fulfilled

My love now take me in your embrace my life’s desires be fulfilled

The ache of my heart, burning body, everything be stilled

My love now take me in your embrace my life’s desires be fulfilled

Please listen to the cries of my forsaken eyes

Please listen to the cries of my forsaken eyes

There can be no paradise without you

All my happiness flies

All my happiness flies and misfortune arrives

Only loneliness survives without you

Nectar of love, O my sweet beloved, sweet beloved

Nectar of love shower without end till the whole world gets filled

My love now take me in your embrace my life’s desires be fulfilled

Make me your very own

Make me your very own, I am all alone

To you life after life I succumb

Make me your very own, I am all alone

To you life after life I succumb

Please quench my desire, demon destroyer*

Quench my desire, demon destroyer

Quench my desire, demon destroyer

Every pore of my being is numb

Nectar of love, O my sweet beloved, sweet beloved

Nectar of love shower without end till the whole world gets filled

My love now take me in your embrace my life’s desires be fulfilled

The ache of my heart, burning body, everything be stilled

My love now take me in your embrace my life’s desires be fulfilled

* Krishna is referred to as a destroyer of Demons in Hindu scriptures

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Aaj Sajan Mohe Ang Laga Lo from Pyaasa

Sakhi ri, biraha ke dukhade sah sahakar jab Raadhe besudh ho li

To ekadin apane Manamohan se ja kar yun boli

Aaj sajan mohe ang laga lo janam safal ho jaae

Aaj sajan mohe ang laga lo janam safal ho jaae

Hriday ki pida, deh ki agani, sab sheetal ho jaae

Aaj sajan mohe ang laga lo janam safal ho jaae

Kai jugon se hain jaage, more nain abhaage

Kai jugon se hain jaage, more nain abhaage

Kahin jiya nahin laage bin tore

Sukh dikhe nahin aage,

Sukh dikhe nahin aage duhkh pichhe-pichhe bhaage

Jag suna suna laage bin tore

Prem sudha, more saanwariya, saanwariya

Prem sudha, itani barasa do, jag jal-thal ho jaae

Aaj sajan mohe ang laga lo janam safal ho jaae

Mohe apana bana lo

Mohe apana bana lo, mori baanh pakad, main hun janam-janam ki daasi

Mohe apana bana lo, mori baanh pakad, main hun janam-janam ki daasi

Mori pyaas bujha do, manahar giridhar

Pyaas bujha do, manahar giridhar,

Pyaas bujha do, manahar giridhar,

Main hun antarghat tak pyaasi

Prem sudha, more saanwariya, saanwariya

Prem sudha, itani barasa do, jag jal-thal ho jaae

Aaj sajan mohe ang laga lo janam safal ho jaae

Hriday ki pida, deh ki agani, sab sheetal ho jaae

Aaj sajan mohe ang laga lo janam safal ho jaae

Sakhi ri, biraha ke dukhade sah sahakar jab Raadhe besudh ho li

When Radha swooned after enduring the pangs of separation

To ekadin apane Manamohan se ja kar yun boli

Then one day she approached her Krishna and spoke thus

Aaj sajan mohe ang laga lo janam safal ho jaae

Today my love, embrace me so that my life’s mission be accomplished

Hriday ki pida, deh ki agani, sab sheetal ho jaae

The ache in my heart and the fire in my body both get pacified

I cannot see happiness ahead and sadness chases me

Jag suna suna laage bin tore

Prem sudha, itani barasa do, jag jal-thal ho jaae

Shower so much nectar of love that the earth gets inundated

Mohe apana bana lo, mori baanh pakad, main hun janam-janam ki daasi

Make me your own, hold my arms I am your slave life after life

Jaane Kya Tune Kahi from Pyaasa Translated and Explained

Jaane Kya Tune Kahi – Translation of Hit Song by Geeta Dutt

Meta Description:  Jaane Kya Tune Kahi is a Bollywood hit song from Guru Dutt movie Pyaasa. Enjoy the Geeta Dutt, S. D. Burman and Sahir Ludhianvi creation explained in English.

Setting the Background for Jaane Kya Tune Kahi

A destitute poet overhears a lady reciting a couplet and approaches her, curious about how she came upon his unpublished verse. The woman, a prostitute, perceives him as a potential customer and begins her solicitation in the form of a song, Jaane Kya Tune Kahi.
While the scene strays from reality, Sahir Ludhianvi’s lyrics possess a subtlety that makes the invitation to the encounter barely discernible. Pyaasa, released in 1957, needed to adhere to the sensibilities of its time. My English translation is slightly more direct, though still nuanced. I’ve included the verse in question before the song.

The Poetic English Translation of the Lyrics of Jaane Kya Tune Kahi

You have no right to complain about my bold glances

When you keep staring at me lovingly

Doesn’t matter what you said

Doesn’t matter what I heard

Because we have a deal

Doesn’t matter what you said

Doesn’t matter what I heard

Because we have a deal

Doesn’t matter what you said

Shiver of enticement

Flutter excitement

Shiver of enticement

Flutter excitement

Rising desires you feel

Because we have a deal

Doesn’t matter what you said

Doesn’t matter what I heard

Because we have a deal

Doesn’t matter what you said

What’s with the lowered gaze

Why walk with halting pace

What’s with the lowered gaze

Why walk with halting pace

Come on with renewed zeal

Because we have a deal

Doesn’t matter what you said

Doesn’t matter what I heard

Because we have a deal

Doesn’t matter what you said

Tresses on shoulders bare

My fragrance in the air

Tresses on shoulders bare

My fragrance in the air

Secrets I will reveal

Because we have a deal

Doesn’t matter what you said

Doesn’t matter what I heard

Because we have a deal

Doesn’t matter what you said

Doesn’t matter what I heard

Because we have a deal

Doesn’t matter what you said

The Original Hindi Lyrics of Jaane Kya Tune Kahi from Pyaasa

Phir na keeje meri gustaakh nigahi ka gilaah
Dekhiye aap ne phir pyar se dekha mujhko

Paanw ruk ruk ke uthhe

Aa gayi chaal nai

Baat kuchh ban hi gai
